Any online dating site you venture on too all promises the same thing… Meet the love of your life because there are unlimited possibilities… Lets be honest to ourselves, is their truly endless possibilities with dating online? Lets start with the facts, yes more and more people are finding their partners on an online dating site. Eli Finkel graphs this change and of course the number keeps growing, in 1994-1998 about 5% of heterosexual couples had met online, from 2007-2009 this numbers more than doubles to 22% of all heterosexual couples meet online (13). So keeping this in mind lets look at this growth from a business standpoint, online dating sites has developed into a billion dollar industry, not only that it is on of the few growth industries during a period of world wide recession (Finkel, 5). Not only is it a growing industry, the amount of time someone spends on dating sites is unbelievable, some estimates say an avid user spends 22 minutes each time they visit a site, that translates to 12 hours a week engaged in online dating sites (Finkel,5). Essentially, the more options a person is given to find the perfect person in a short amount of time, the less they are inclined to stay in a relationship. For example, Slater’s case study subject, Jacob, a man with a difficult time meeting women and genuinely falling in love. After easily finding a dream woman on a dating website he found it easier to find someone else once their relationship ended. Hence, online dating made it easier for him (and possibly other users) to change views on a long or lifetime monogamous relationship.

Entire companies are run through the internet. With gas prices rising every day, it has also become increasingly popular to see a lot of jobs turn to telecommuting.
