“Races condemned to one hundred years of solitude did not have a second opportunity on this earth (Marquez 417),” Gabriel Garcia Marquez makes these powerful last words in One Hundred Years of Solitude ring true. Marquez demonstrates through many examples that human beings cannot exist in isolation. In order for the race to survive, people must be independent. Examples of solitude are found throughout the one hundred year life of the Buendia family and Macondo. Solitude in OHYOS reveals both physical and emotional aspects by being shown individually, geographically, and romantically. Although they have no control over it, the intent of the characters reflects the want to remain alone. Their destiny signifies the forgotten and alone.
OHYOS begins with geographic isolation. Jose Arcadio Buendia shouts, “God damn it! Macondo is surrounded by water on all sides! (Marquez 12).” The idea of Macondo being an island embraces irrelevance. The town illustrates itself cut off from the rest of the world. Ursula and Jose Arcadio Buendia are looking for solitude. By founding Macondo, Jose Arcadio Buendia was escaping from murdering Prudencio Aguilar. Eventually forcing them to retreat, Aguilar’s ghost haunts them.
The family seems to remain very involved within it. Much of this portrays Spanish culture. To find many generations of the same family living in one house demonstrates it not being uncommon in Spanish-speaking countries. The Buendia house always has various relatives within it. By asserting not being the only explanation, the incest of the family criticizes a theme throughout the novel and symbolizes a significant factor in the solitude of this family. Things like this give more importance to the solitude in the title. The solitude perfectly reflects the colonization that occurred in the 16th century and later in the 19th century after the people is free, they don’t know how and where to use this newfound freedom.
Marquez never fails to surprise with his humor, whether it is fat woman eating competitions or balancing beer bottles on penises. The understanding of the context becomes a minor detail when appreciating the beauty and while there are many questions in OHYOS that require answers, Marquez succeeds to give it in his Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech, “Races condemned to One Hundred Years of Solitude will have, at last and forever, a second opportunity on this earth.”

Throughout the Brief wondrous life of Oscar Wao, Diaz conveys that there is isolation in every person through his characters that are all different in personalization but are still isolated from something.
This extract emphasises the lonely, outworld feeling that would have been felt living in such settings. This puts into perspective the feeling that will be felt during the coarse of the plot development.

The short story ‘‘Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas’’ by Ursula Le Guin describes a utopian society based on the suffering and mistreatment of an unfortunate child. Lonleiness is a big theme in the book, most of the characters experience it in some way shape or form; and all of them have a way of channeling it. nevertheless, the only people whose lives really change change during the novel are the ones who make an effort to fight their struggle. Those who do nothing about it, stay lonely. Like in real life, if you dont fight a problem, it’ll never go away. The old Greek saying "God helps those who helps themselves" describes the esence of the novel very well because it displays the fact that maybe the only thing keeping us lonely is ourselves.

In the book The House on Mango Street, written by Sandra Cisneros, the main character, Esperanza, was affected by many external forces, including family. Esperanza is a young teen who just moved to Mango Street, and she doesn’t like her house because it’s ugly, and she dreams of another house that her family has promised one day. “I have inherited her name, but I don’t want to inherit her place by the window (Cisneros 11). This was in reference to her great grandmother who didn’t want to marry, but Esperanza’s great grandfather kidnapped her and forced her to marry, where Esperanza’s great grandmother never forgave him and looked out a window for the rest of her life. Esperanza didn’t chose her name, her family did, and she didn’t chose who her family is either. The external force of family is an issue in real life just as it is in this novel, and the teens learn to either love it or hate it.

When a person becomes trapped in a situation that stems from an individual with greater authority, being manipulative can be a very promising method to escape. The Thousand and One Nights does a very good job of being a good example of someone in this situation that uses stories within a story to capture encapsulate the attention of the reader. Despite the many little stories that go into the text, the main story behind it all is about a king named King Shahrayar and how he goes insane after catching his wife having sexual relations with a slave. After he sees this happen, he realizes that he can never trust any woman again and none of them are trustworthy. By expressing his views on women, he decides to marry a different woman every night, then the next morning have them killed by beheading. This is an ongoing event that brings death to most of the women in the village. Soon after, the king’s Vizier’s daughter, Shahrazad, came up with a brilliant idea that will end up saving her fellow countrywomen and hopefully keep the king from murdering so many innocent people. Her method behind all this is by telling the kind a different story every night that leaves him on a cliffhanger, making him curious enough to keep her alive for another day to continue her story. Shahrazad keeps herself spared from the king because of her cunning, and compassionate personality.

Throughout the book, the main character, Alexandra, demonstrates how lonely she truly is, even though she is very strong and independent. This shows how being independent can lead to loneliness, even if you are extremely happy with what you are doing. The symbolism of the houses swaying in the wind, trying not to be pushed over by the loneliness that comes with independence. Emil is a great example of loneliness and independence going hand in hand. He traveled all the way to Mexico, but still longed for Marie and could not think of anything or anyone else.
