Omi & Winant, Bonilla-Silva, and Loveman all have different approach in understanding the distinction between ethnicity and race. Omi & Winant and Bonilla-silva all made a distinction between ethnicity and race, and study race through the lens of power relation, while Loveman argued that it is important to study these two side by side. DuBois articulate blackness as both race and ethnicity with the approach of “Double-Consciousness”.

Like Omi & Winant, Bonilla-Silva think that race is a categorization that assigned by dominant group and the members in the subordinate group act according to the expectation of the dominant group, whether the members aware or not. According to Bonilla-Silva, race acquired a life of their own and do not need human as actor to function. One of the main topics Bonilla-Silva talks about in his book is racism and more specifically, color-blind racism. Racism is the belief that your race is the most supreme compared to others and they are inferior. Racism leads to other factors as well, such as discrimination, exploitation, and prejudice. Color-blind racism is the idea that racism does not truly exist, making it seem very subtle and everything in life is based off of meritocracy (hard work). Color-blind racism is connected to race because although it is trying to say racism is non-existent, it carries out different categories of action which prove racism is present in today’s world. To be more specific, the four frames of color-blind racism are abstract liberalism, naturalization, cultural racism, and minimization. These four frames go into great detail on how racism is expressed in different ways and yet make it seem like it does not exist. The biggest idea of color-blind racism is meritocracy though and how those of color are blamed for not working hard enough when it comes to justifying racism. This relates to Bonilla-Silva’s research because those whites who were being interviewed were asked why they got the job instead of say the black candidate and their answers were always similar to one another. Meritocracy came into play with this question because the whites always said that those of color did not work hard enough and even brought in the idea of model minority. Model minority is our societies response to racism and how the Asian minorities have succeeded and therefore racism does not exist. The whites used the Asians as justification to prove that other minorities need to work just as hard as them in order to get better jobs and such. For at least three decades race, gender and biopower have all been linked together. The three terms used, are frameworks installed by governments to manage the population by categorizing, regulating and controlling its subjects. Race, gender and biopower are intertwined to illuminate the treatment of the minority for centuries. The mistreatment, discrimination and suffering experienced by the minorities throughout history is evident in the texts provided.
Race and ethnicity is a main factor in the way we identify others and ourselves. The real question here is does race/ethnicity still matter in the U.S.? For some groups race is not a factor that affects them greatly and for others it is a constant occurrence in their mind. But how do people of mix race reacts to this concept, do they feel greatly affected by their race? This is the question we will answer throughout the paper. I will first examine the battle of interracial relationship throughout history and explain how the history greatly explains the importance of being multiracial today. This includes the backlash and cruelty towards interracial couple and their multiracial children. Being part of a multiracial group still contains its impact in today’s society; therefore race still remaining to matter to this group in the U.S. People who place themselves in this category are constantly conflicted with more than one cultural backgrounds and often have difficulty to be accepted.
The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B Dubois is a influential work in African American literature and is an American classic. In this book Dubois proposes that "the problem of the Twentieth Century is the problem of the color-line." His concepts of life behind the veil of race and the resulting "double-consciousness, this sense of always looking at one's self through the eyes of others," have become touchstones for thinking about race in America. In addition to these lasting concepts, Souls offers an evaluation of the progress of the races and the possibilities for future progress as the nation entered the twentieth century.
