At that moment Santiago lost faith himself and no longer wanted to fight for his survival and dignity. In the story The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway, Santiago struggles on a daily basis to catch a fish. Eventually, with courage and patience Santiago catches a massive fish. Santiago was proud and achieved his biggest goal in life. Even though humans sacrifice their time and energy in order to survive it's important to not give up on something that you take pride it.
This story takes place in a small Cuban village, mainly in a boat, on the ocean. When Santiago fishes, he usually fishes with Manolian, who is a young boy. Ever since Manolian was five he had always fished and spent time with Santiago. Because Santiago never caught anything
On page 29 the narrator states, “He always thought of the sea as la mar which is what people call her in spanish when they love her.” This quote shows that Santiago enjoys, not only fishing, but spending time with the sea. Another spanish reference Santiago made was the point at which he called the dolphin "dorado" which implies brilliant. Santiago alluded that to the dolphin since he hadn't eaten in so long and like gold, the dolphin was significant to him since it was all he needed to eat. When Santiago fishes many of the words are fishing terms. One word that is repeatedly mentioned is harpoon rope, which is a kind of spear with a rope joined. While reading this story it might be difficult to comprehend what precisely Santiago is doing if readers don’t know many fishing terms towards the middle of the story he tells himself again and again, "I wish the kid was here." Although Santiago never said he missed him, readers can detect that he cares for the boy and misses Manolin because he states it numerous times. Additionally, Santiago is continually talking to himself out loud. He constantly tells himself to continue going all through the book. For instance, he instructs himself to get rest and that he will catch a fish. Not knowing he will get the fish, he inspires himself supposing he will.
All in all The Old Man and the Sea, is a book that makes you think and question yourself if Santiago was defeated or took a victory in catching the Marlin. Throughout the book Santiago struggles and strives on a daily basis.An example of when Santiago was struggling would be when he fought the sharks until he had no materials left to fight with. At the point when the sharks noticed the blood and ate his fish, he battled off each and every one. Because the sharks ate his fish, Santiago carried one of them back with him to show off to the civilians. This shows that he didn't surrender and tried 100% to save the
