This is an advert targeted for mature women; the aim of the product is to reduce aging of the skin, mainly the face among these types of women. The product is from Olay. Olay is a multi-millionaire brand that first produced anti-aging cream then went on to producing all kinds of skin care products (the guardian, March 2012), however it has always been known for its anti-aging products.
A lot is shown in this 30 second advert many symbols, different images, all kinds of colours and a small variety of people. The first thing we see is a person holding a magazine with a women's face on it, the name of the women on the magazine is Caroline Penri after this a celebration is revealed there is a lot of people everywhere smiling and laughing and drinking most of these people are white, then we see two children they were boys and they were also white. After the boys were shown, we see bottles of total effects (the product), next we perceive the same two boys shown before, though this time they seem to be upset. After the upset boys are shown, we see the woman that was shown at the beginning (Caroline Penri) in bed with a man next to her. The last thing the advert portrays is a variety of cakes with numbers on them the numbers were 27, 30, 33, 34 and 36. One thing that really stood out to me in this advert is the numbers they had used like a list, 1 wedding, 2 kids, 43 bottles of total effects, 7 signs, 185 tantrums, 378 pre-dawn starts and 9 birthdays.

It is shocking how many discourses a 30 second advertisement can produce. Many people will see this advertisement differently to the way I have perceived it. But I still think that it is quite clear how much of a stereotypical view this advertisement is portraying. It has succeeded in attracting many customers and has helped sell a lot of the product. It is producing this kind of fear among women about old age that aging isn’t a good thing, once they are 30 they need to start looking after their face because they are getting old. Women need to totally make sure that they always look young or that is it, their life is over. Media does a very good job at portraying this.

Common sense seems to dictate that commercials just advertise products. But in reality, advertising is a multi-headed beast that targets specific genders, races, ages, etc. In “Men’s Men & Women’s Women”, author Steve Craig focuses on one head of the beast: gender. Craig suggests that, “Advertisers . . . portray different images to men and women in order to exploit the different deep seated motivations and anxieties connected to gender identity.” In other words, advertisers manipulate consumers’ fantasies to sell their product. In this essay, I will be analyzing four different commercials that focuses on appealing to specific genders.
This advertisement appears in the Seventeen magazines, whose readers range in age between thirteen and twenty-five. The visual shows a young, blonde, Caucasian female who is attracting the readers to the COVERGIRL™ product. Placing this sort of ad in the Seventeen magazines is appealing to most young women due to the beautiful celebrity, Taylor Swift, who uses the same product. Also, the colors used, such as the pastel pinks, draws in the reader since they are very feminine colors. Finally, the product itself is appealing to the audience of Seventeen because younger women like to look their best, and to do that, lip-gloss is a handy accessory.
This is a stereotype, which has been engraved into heads of men, women, and children. By plastering the world with models who seem to have it the genetic jackpot, Dove set out to discredit this cultural cast created by our society. Body image, to some people, is the first part of a person they notice. A study conducted by Janowsky and Pruis compared body image between younger and older women. They found that although older women “may not feel the same societal pressure as younger women to be thin and beautiful…some feel that they need to make themselves look as young as possible” (225). Since women are being faced with pressure to conform in ways that seem almost impossible, Jeffers came to the conclusion “they should create advertising that challenges conventional stereotypes of beauty” (34) after conducting various interviews with feminist scholars. The stance of Figure 1’s model screams confident. She is a voluptuous, curvy and beautiful women standing nearly butt-naked in an ad, plastered on billboards across the globe. Ultimately, she is telling women and girls everywhere that if I can be confident in my body, so can you. Jessica Hopper reveals, “some feel that the ads still rely too heavily on using sex to sell” (1). However, I feel as if these are just criticisms from others who are bitter. The documentary Killing Us Softly 4 discusses and examines the role of women in advertisements and the effects of the ads throughout history. The film begins by inspecting a variety of old ads. The speaker, Jean Kilbourne, then discusses and dissects each ad describing the messages of the advertisements and the subliminal meanings they evoke. The commercials from the past and now differ in some respects but they still suggest the same messages. These messages include but are not limited to the following: women are sexual objects, physical appearance is everything, and women are naturally inferior then men. Advertisement targeting is used by many popular companies for products that both men and women use. One of the most common advertisements that we see targeting is Oil of Olay’s Regenerate products. These products are designed to correct and prevent the on slot of wrinkles. This product is not made specifically for women, nor was it made for anyone over a specific age, however in the advertisement it always starts with a close up of a older female and revels in the fact that their face cream had beat more expensive cream in some sort of challenge. The women in the commercial are old enough for you to know that she old enough to need the facial cream but does not have a wrinkle to be found.
