A growing amount of research on officer safety indicates the importance and relevance of this topic to the world of law enforcement. Researchers and educators are interested in identifying specific factors that influence officer safety in relation to performance. The problem of police safety may be the most important and necessary area of research when concerned with performance.The purpose of this review is to provide information for police officers who are interested in improving their work performance and creating safe working conditions in the field. Lack of self defense training can put an officer in serious danger when encountering a suspect that tries to escape an officer or injure them. A study done by a Dutch police department found that officers that had actually encountered violence on duty and also practicing self defense helped them in the field (Nieuwenhuys). On the other hand, officers who experienced anxiety more often reported to have more problems in the field (Nieuwenhuys). Results of an online questionnaire done by the Dutch police department showed that officers that had additional experience was associated with self-perceived better performance. (Nieuwenhuys). Most officers in the department reported that many of the more experienced officers felt that the currently taught self defense is only moderately useable and not efficient enough (Nieuwenhuys 1). Although many officers are able to handle violent suspects, some officers with a lack of self defense training could have trouble with handling the suspect and put themselves in danger and work would become unsafe for that officer. Throughout the risk assessment process, ideas for action were identified and documented. The documentation of these ideas led to the development of potential action item worksheets which were then selected, prioritized, and refined. Detailed risk assessment information for each hazard is included and located through this document.
The use of force, particularly with correlation to officer morale and/or inadequate education/training, has become particularly problematic. Measures should be taken to reduce the injury to suspects, particularly physical injury resulting from poor officer tactics or malicious intentions not related to upholding the law. These are problems, which, if properly handled and rectified, will result in improved officer morale, improved relationships with the public as well as ensure a continued upstanding reputation for the oldest police force in the nation.
Law enforcement officers are in constant dangerous situations while out doing their responsibilities. When in these threatening situations, police officers typically have little to no time to determine the right precaution. These precautions may lead to the death of a suspect or even the officer themselves. The media has recently shed light on police brutality with use of force. Use of force could be defined as the amount of effort an officer must use in order to make an unwilling subject compel. Police officers are usually trained to enable the proper responsible to a dangerous situation they may be put in. In this paper I will go through the guidelines that a police officer must obey when considering a certain degree of use of force. Within each guideline there will be the pro and cons with that situation and also a recent case that happened. This paper will also talk about how this topic can be addressed more properly. These guidelines that officer are taught during their training are called Use of Force Continuum.
Police officers must be trained to shoot with precision; correspondingly, they must not solely be trained to shoot to kill, but also to shoot to simply harm. Once they are taught both ways, they must learn to assess their situation to conclude whether it requires the former or the latter. This is highly important for the reason that it can spare a life, and it easier to prosecute officers who failed to use proper protocol for shooting. Furthermore, this training helps to prevent discrimination against minority groups. Young people and the police have, for many years, experienced a tense and confrontational relationship (Borgquist & Johnson et al., 1995). This has led to a great wealth of literature based upon the notion of police-youth interaction. Much of this literature has tended to focus upon juvenile criminality and the reasons why young people commit such seemingly high levels of crime. Whilst the relationship between young people and the police force has been widely theorised and explained, there is very little literature on juvenile attiudes towards the police. Research that concerns societies attitudes towards the police force tends to focus upon the views and opinions of adults (Hurst and Frank, 2000). In this first section of my literature review I am going to focus upon work that allows us to gain a deeper understanding of why young people are so important when looking at crime. This section will allow us to comprehend the ways in which, literature suggests, young people view the police. This knowledge will provide a basis for my research in which I look more specifically at youth attitudes towards PCSO’s.
