A growing amount of research on officer safety indicates the importance and relevance of this topic to the world of law enforcement. Researchers and educators are interested in identifying specific factors that influence officer safety in relation to performance. The problem of police safety may be the most important and necessary area of research when concerned with performance.The purpose of this review is to provide information for police officers who are interested in improving their work performance and creating safe working conditions in the field. In the intense profession of police work, three main factors that affect an officer’s performance are fatigue, stress, and lack of self defense training. Lack of self defense training can put an officer in serious danger when encountering a suspect that tries to escape an officer or injure them. A study done by a Dutch police department found that officers that had actually encountered violence on duty and also practicing self defense helped them in the field (Nieuwenhuys). On the other hand, officers who experienced anxiety more often reported to have more problems in the field (Nieuwenhuys). Results of an online questionnaire done by the Dutch police department showed that officers that had additional experience was associated with self-perceived better performance. (Nieuwenhuys). Most officers in the department reported that many of the more experienced officers felt that the currently taught self defense is only moderately useable and not efficient enough (Nieuwenhuys 1). Although many officers are able to handle violent suspects, some officers with a lack of self defense training could have trouble with handling the suspect and put themselves in danger and work would become unsafe for that officer.
