After reading both Odyssey and Beowulf, I began to notice some similarities and differences between Odyssey and Beowulf. Even though Odysseus and Beowulf are both example of heroic acts; they both have different journeys to face. I’m going to compare and contrast the characters. There are some common similarities between Odysseus and Beowulf, such as their leadership, journey, and strength. Even though they faced different journeys they had to face. Both of them were heroic on their journey, but Odysseus just wanted to go home. On the other hand Beowulf wanted trophies, and praise. They both were able to conquer tasks other people couldn’t. They both have people who follow them and consider them leaders, and accompany them on their journeys. Also some of their values where the same such as courageousness, loyalty, and fates. They both showed courageousness by fighting a monster. They showed loyalty to the people they cared for and their crews. Lastly they were both bond by their fates they had to overcome. But overall they were both portrayed as hero’s in the story. …show more content…

Odysseus shows many heroic characteristics, but he is focused on envy and punishment. He had to battle against a lot such as Calypsos island, Poseidon, Cyclops, etc. He was constantly trying to get back at the gods and the people; and trying to show that he was all mighty and didn’t need their help. At the end of the story he eventually makes it back home, but in order to survive he had to put his pride aside and be disguised as a beggar until he could kill all whom did him wrong. He was a great leader and thinker, when he was trapped in the cave with the Cyclops he though of a way to get out. Instead of listening to his crew and killing him in his sleep, he came up with the plan to get him drunk and blind him. However, he didn’t mind sacrificing his men.
