Leaders come in all shapes and sizes, they are remembered for their selfless acts and courage to do what others have failed to do. There are many types of leaders. A not so good leader is considered a detrimental leader, because they tend to be selfish, poor in judgement of character, and only see their needs. A great leader is defined by their actions, bravery, and ability to step-up when things get tough, someone who will put it all on the line for those following behind regardless of the stakes. Odysseus was a great leader because of his courage, strength, and compassion that he displayed for others to witness while encouraging others to be influenced. Odysseus was a brave, courageous, and fearless leader who overcame his own fears for his men. There comes a point where Odysseus must get passed the Cyclops and away from the cave. He shows his level of strength when he was faced with the Cyclops. He used a spear “sprinted, lifted it, and rammed in deep in his crater eye” to defeat the crater. He pushed through the physical barriers to overcome what needed to be done in order for him and his men to move forward. He didn’t let the size of the Cyclops get in the way of his mission. Compassion is another positive characteristic that complements a great leader. Odysseus reveals his compassionate side after losing six of his men who were eaten by Scylla. Most leaders in this type of situation would not think about it and just move forward. Instead Odysseus takes a moment to reflect on the loss. He describes the sorrow that came over him when he says that “deathly pity ran me through at that sight-far the worst I ever suffered.” He shows in this quote the compassion that he felt experiencing such a big personal loss not only for the mission but the personal loss of his
