OCD is broken down into two components the obsession and the compulsion. The first component; obsession is when an individual is consistently having these reoccurring thoughts or images about a certain problem or issue in their life. For example; an individual that has OCD can have a constant thought or image about getting sick or dying from the various germs or diseases that people contract every day. Two very important aspects of OCD are obsession and compulsion. Clients will develop obsession which can be defined by the DSM as “recurrent and persistent thoughts, impulses, or images that are experienced, at some point during the disturbance as intrusive and inappropriate and that cause marked anxiety or distress” (p.462). Compulsion is “repetitive behaviors or mental acts that the person feels they should perform in response to an obsession or according to rules that must be applied rigidly” (DSM, 2000, p. 462).

The Mayo Clinic diagnoses OCD in steps that may include a physical exam, lab tests, or a psychological evaluation. After you are diagnosed, there are a few different routes to take. The Anxiety and Depression Association of America believes that “untreated OCD can be detrimental to all aspects of life, so getting proper treatment is essential to taking control over the illness and gaining relief (OCD, n.d.).”
