Nutrition Therapy for Cardiovascular Disease
It is imperative as a nurse to develop an understanding that caring for a patient goes beyond the physical care given and it includes a holistic aspect: caring for the body, mind and soul. This holistic approach can be applied when assessing patients’ nutritional status and helping them implement healthy life choices, while living with a disease and possibly the comorbidities caused by the disease. Specifically, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and the comorbidities associated can be highly preventable with adequate nutrition, regular exercise and management of a healthy weight throughout life. It is the care provider’s duty to educate patients on prevention and risk reduction for CVD, and to work together with patients with CVD so that they maintain quality of life. The purpose of this paper is to discuss nutritional therapy for prevention and patients who suffer from cardiovascular disease and the role of the nurse.
Cardiovascular disease is a broad term for diseases that affect the heart and blood vessels, and worldwide CVD is the most common cause of death, with 30% of all deaths attributed to this disease (Walker, 2013, p. 48). With most diseases, prevention is achievable through eating healthy which means making sure one gets adequate intake of vegetables, fruits, dairy, whole grains and water daily. Regular exercise and management of a healthy weight, as well as refraining from cigarette smoking, helps reduce the risk of CVD.

The book Salt, Sugar, and Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us discusses the danger of food with its readers. The dangers of food discussed in the book are the ingredients of Salt, Sugar and Fat in the food individuals consume on a daily basis. Producers use these ingredients to their advantage to get the consumers bliss point. The bliss point attained is used by the food giants to achieve a profit. However due to research on the health risks of these ingredients food companies are strategizing in order to maintain their profit and earn more of a profit.
We Americans are always on the go, no matter if it is on our way to work, school, or exercise. Most people are eating some types of processed food usually for almost every meal due to how quick it is to prepare. However, most Americans do not realize that the nutrition facts on the other side of their granola bar shows the ugly truth about what they are eating. Michael Pollan who is a highly esteemed author on this subject refers to the “Western Diet” as mostly processed foods. Pollan’s main argument is that Americans need to reduce the amount of processed foods that are consumed so that health risks will be reduced.
In recent studies, it was discovered that most of the foods that Americans consumed are foods which had gone through so many processes and thereby losing most of its nutritional values. Unhealthy nutrients are also been added to foods as additive during production to either preserve flavor or enhance its taste and appearance. An individual cannot simply trust what he or she is consuming at a fast food restaurant or even a cheap prepared meal at a grocery store. Processed food or western diet needs to be replaced and totally taken out of the American life and diet; this will help the Americans to live a healthier life, and spend less on medical bills.
For instance, there have been several nutritional interventions implemented in health care facilities. Specifically, screening can be effective in health care facilities to aid in identifying poor nutrition among the elderly, which is often undetected. Additionally, screening tools has been used to establish appropriate nutritional meals. One study by researchers Babineau, Jolyne, Villalon, Laporte, Manon, & Payette (2008) showed that the introduction of screening in a general hospital raised awareness of nutrition-related care. In this intervention dietitians conducts a full nutritional assessment and implemented a nutritional care plan for patients aged 65 or older (Babineau et al., 2008). In summary, two of the effective components which can prevent heart disease in edible vegetables have already been found—the lycopene and dietary fiber. They have various edible sources for people’s consumption. While much has already been learned about these two biologically active substances, much remains to be learned. It is also important to understand the possible influence of other biologically active components, as well as people’s daily diet to keep cardiac health according to the research.
There are preventive measures that can be taken to prevent coronary heart disease. Go to the doctor and get a regularly routine checkup. Mainly have a healthy lifestyle by having a healthy diet; this diet should include a low salt intake, whole grain foods, low fat/ fat free diary, meats (lean), fruits , vegetables, nuts, and water. Also physical activities or being active decrease the chances of getting CHD.
It can be prevented naturally by practicing vegetarianism which refers to those who practice a diet low in meat and fish or may not consume meat products at all. Vegetarianism diet offers an advantage because people who practice or change their lifestyle to no meat consumption have lower body mass index (BMI), and can reverse the effects of atherosclerosis. (reducing, 2010). However, people have to be careful while practicing it because a poorly vegetarian diet can cause anemia, fatigue, decreased zinc, decreased vitamin C. Also it can decrease B12 and this may cause neural tube defects, congenital heart defects, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease. It is very important to educate vegetarians to have a vitamin B supplementation to prevent another type of conditions. (reducing, 2010). There is another way to prevent or reverse heart disease by consuming seven heart nutrients which are fiber, fish oil, magnesium, vitamin D, vitamin K, zinc, and COQ10. Also, there are statin drugs such as Crestor (rosuvastatin) and Lipitor (atorvastatin) that are being prescribe to cholesterol-lowering but there is a concern about their safety and effectiveness. There is an alternative to these types of drugs. The statin alternatives are Niacin (B3) known to be effective in lowering blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and citrus flavones that work blocking the enzymes in the liver

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death amongst individuals living the United States. For years, I have been eating what I want. Food choices are a significant factor that affects our health. What we like or crave, often, is the determining variable in what we eat. Finding the right balance of food choices is the key factor in improving our health benefits. Choosing nutrient-dense foods will provide more nutritional value than foods that are found to be low in nutrient density. Making the right choices in foods, however, is extremely difficult. Food has been a common source of necessity in our everyday lives as humans. It helps gives us nutrition and energy to live throughout our life. Over several decades, the development of making foods has evolved. They have changed from natural to processed foods in recent years. Nowadays natural ingredients are barely used in the making of foods like bread, cheese, or yogurt. The food industry today has replaced natural food making with inorganic ingredients. The cause of this switch is due to processed foods being easier, cheaper and faster to make. Artificial nutrition and processed foods have been proven to last longer in market shelves then natural foods. Also, due to artificial additives in processed foods they help satisfy consumers taste more than natural ingredients. The method of producing processed foods is common in today's food industry and helps make money faster and efficiently for companies. Examples of this can be found in all markets that distribute food. Even though processed foods may be easier and faster to make, they are nowhere near as healthy for consumers compared to natural foods.
