Since I graduated from high school in 1992 I knew that my career path was going to be in the medical field. I had originally set my sights on becoming a pediatrician, but that goal changed after working in a nursing home. Working as a Certified Nurse Aide I got the opportunity not only to learn about different aspect of healthcare but I also learned a lot about the person that I have become. I realized that I have a passion for the care of others and a great need to take in everything about the healthcare industry. I have made attempts to work in other industries but my path keeps coming back to Nursing. Now you might ask, if this is my passion then what has taken me so long to complete my degree. After my grandmother died, I subsequently gave birth to my second child that was two months early and took on the care of my grandfather. As these events occurred, my dream of nursing began to dim, then my closest uncle was diagnosed with stage four mesothelioma. He lived a little over a year after his diagnosis. In the end I took him into my home and acted as his caregiver while on hospice care. Working with the hospice team and caring for my uncle brought back my light and passion for Nursing so I went back to school. I was able to finish all of my general courses at the University of Alaska and was waitlisted for a year, during that time, my family decided to make a life change and move to Colorado. As our home was being sold, I received a letter that I had been accepted into their program. It was the most difficult decision I have ever made in my life but I chose to keep moving forward and take my chances in Colorado and so I am here. I chose CCU after trying to complete my degree at other institutions in Colorado only to be waitlisted or told that I would have a better chance if I began my education essentially from the begining.
