As nurses, we strive to provide the best care possible for every patient. There is a standard of care that every nurse should follow while being careful to not cross professional boundaries. There are many aspects of care nurses should strive to accomplish to stay professional. The most important of these aspects are to be civil, ethical, honest, forgiving, to be better than good, consistent, be an effective communicator, be accountable for your own actions, be collaborative with other health care providers, be up to date with current skills and knowledge, involved, a model to others, and continue to be prepared every day ( Black, 2014).

I go out of my way to treat every person with equal respect even if I disagree with their opinion. To fully respect someone you must also be honest with them especially when it is difficult to tell the whole truth. Effective communication helps aid with terrible news. It is equally important to listen and be open to other individuals’ ideas and opinions as it is to voice yours. I believe that you should stick to your ethics and stand up for what is right including the professional standard. Your behavior should reflect your values and what you expect others to be like. I always strive to do my best and to be current with all assignments and skills needed. I have recently learned how important it is to be collaborative with my fellow classmates to help ourselves achieve more. Visiting your patient while off duty and not in uniform was the second breach. Inappropriate touching and flirtation started the third breach following with friending the patient on social media. Giving out your personal phone number during an appointment with the patient is also a breach of professionalism along with more inappropriate touching that could be construed as flirting. Being unprofessional can damage to the relationship gained between the nurse and the patient (“Boundaries,” 2017). The amount of intimate information exchanged between the two can affect how honest or comfortable the patient is with their nurse. Communication will no longer be therapeutic if they have established a non-professional relationship. The nurse can harm the patient when boundaries are crossed (“Boundaries,” 2017).
If other nurses notice that professional boundaries have been crossed they are obligated to report you. The person reporting you is obligated to report you to your supervisor and the state board of nursing. Depending on the state, you may even be reported to local law enforcement. If there is a sexual misconduct, there will be an investigation on the reported claim by the state board of nursing. I agree with you that the nurses violated provision 9 of the nursing code of ethics. Nurses have an obligation to themselves, their whole team and to the patients to express their values. Communication is key in a hospital, so everyone knows what is correct and what isn’t within the workplace. In order to have a productive, ethical, positive environment. These values that should be promoted affect everyone in the hospital, especially the patients, and can have a negative outcome if those values are not lived out. Nurses have to frequently communicate and reaffirm the values they are supposed follow frequently so when a difficult situation comes along that may challenge their beliefs they will remain strong and their values will not falter.
Section 5.4, which is the preservation of integrity, suggests that nurses will inevitably have to deal with threats to their moral or professional integrity at some point in their careers. Nurses should do their best to maintain professional integrity when met with adversity, weather it be from uncooperative issuance companies, an unsound work environment, or from the patients themselves. Nurse A seemed confident and calm while nurse B appeared tired. With the first patients, I noticed that both nurses were asking for first and last name and confirmed the information with the picture in the computer and the medication cup. After a few minutes, I turned my attention to nurse B because I noticed she did not ask a particular patient for his name. Instead, she relied on the name provided by a patient care technician. When she was about to give the medication to the patient, nurse A noticed that the patient on the computer screen was not the patient on the counter. She immediately told nurse B “ That is not Mr… girl ” and nurse B responded while laughing “ He looks exactly like …, I need to get some coffee ASAP”. The patient immediately realized what happened and told nurse B his name. After that, nurse B reached for the right cup and administered the medication to the patient. Even though a medication error was not committed and no harm was inflicted to the patient, by violating important QSEN competencies this incident could have caused a negative patient outcome.
As a nurse it is our primary job to protect and promote the well being of patients throughout the health care industry. The most prominent resource that emphasizes nursing professionalism is an article from the Kentucky Nurses. The author Teresa Huber thoroughly demonstrates the idea behind nursing professionalism and the importance of being a skilled nurse. The author states that professionalism is “respect for human dignity and to never discriminate against patients” (Huber 2015). Professionalism isn’t purely based on appearance but also on the attitude of the nurse and the amount of respect a nurse shows their patients. It’s important for a nurse to never judge a patient and never make a patient feel like they are in the wrong, doing so demonstrates an inability to care for the patient in a respectful manner. Also demonstrating disrespect to a patient’s wishes and concerns will only worsen the rapport the nurse must make with the patient. The author also expresses that “We are accountable for ourselves” (Huber 2015, p.1) that nurses must take responsibility for their actions and make sure that they are giving the best quality care that they can give. According to the American Nurses Association (ANA), (2010) “the nurse promotes, advocates for and strives to protect the health, safety and rights of the patient” (p. 6). Nursing responsibilities should be acted upon at the highest standard and must be based on legal and ethical obligations. Healthcare provider’s perception and judgment of the patient’s well being, as well as taking into account the rights of the patient in every action, is one of the key elements in nursing practice. International Council of Nurses (ICN) (2006) states “The nurse at all times maintains standards of personal conduct which reflect well on the profession and enhance public confidence” (p. 3).
Unprofessional Conduct according to the Arkansas State Board of Nursing is detailed in ASBN Rules and Regulations, Chapter 7, Section XV, #6. The section states the following conduct are considered unprofessional. Nursing surrounds the concept of patient care physically, mentally and ethically. The therapeutic relationship that is created is built on the knowledge and skills of the nurse and relies on patient and nurse trusting one another. The use of nursing skills can ensure these boundaries are maintained, it allows for safe patient care. Professional boundaries are the line that nurses cannot cross, involving aspects such as patient confidentiality and privacy, ensuring legal aspects of nursing and the boundaries put in place are not breached. However, nurses accepting financial or personal gain from patient can also cross these professional boundaries. It is only through education in this area that the rights of patients can be preserved, as well as the nursing standards. Through education in areas such as confidentiality, boundaries can remain in tact and the patient care can remain within the zone of helpfulness.
During junior year, my thinking on what being a professional was expanded greatly. I was still dressing according to code, coming in on time and making sure to show respect, but I really broadened what I viewed as being a professional. While I did not look up professional practices of the hospital during my time on the unit, I did ask the staff and faculty their policies which govern their interventions. During my time, I found out about the MEWS score, and how this is used to determine the severity of a patient’s condition, and if the need for intervention exists. I also found out about flushing a hep-loc, and really provided privacy to patients. I did have a HIV positive patient, but it was undetermined if the family with this person knew, so any mention of the disease was done out of hearing range. Friendships may be formed; however, to have professional interactions is something that is not always followed. In terms of patient confidentiality, we may not realize that a HIPPA violation has occurred due to friendly conversation with coworkers. My core values and beliefs are honesty, caring, family, and lifelong learning, which I use every day in my life. The core of nursing is caring, knowledge, and integrity that focuses on the patient’s needs, healing, safety, and encouragement. Personal and professional beliefs overlap the driving force of nursing. The qualities of a good nurse are not or cannot be turned off and on, and are part of the person I am. We are just helping hands that are always striving to help others. I am not perfect. I am a human being and sometimes mistakes will be made, but I always try my best. If something goes wrong, I will examine the situation, and learn from it to make me a better nurse than I was before. I will monitor and reflect on my own actions to ensure that I am staying true to what I believe are the best nursing practices. Professionalism in the workplace in many professions can be simplified into general categories such as neat appearance, interaction with clients, punctuality, general subject knowledge, and likability. In nursing, professionalism encompasses a much more broad and inclusive set of criteria than any other profession. Nurses specifically are held to a higher standard in nearly every part of their job. Nurses are not only expected to uphold what it seen as professional in the aforementioned categories, but they are also expected to promote health, wellbeing, and advocate for patients, but also continually provide the highest standard of care, demonstrate exemplary subject and procedural knowledge, and abide by the Code of ethics set forth by the American Nurses Association. This Code of Ethics includes the complex moral and ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, fidelity, honesty, and integrity.
The American Nurses Association created guidelines for the profession including, a set clear rules to be followed by individuals within the profession, Code of Ethics for Nurses. Written in 1893, by Lystra Gretter, and adopted by the ANA in 1926, The Code of Ethics for Nurses details the role metaethics, normative ethics, and applied ethics have within the field (ANA, 2015). Moral obligation for an individual differs within professions than it does within an individual’s personal life, so the code of ethics was written to establish rules within the profession. The moral obligation to provide quality care include the fundamental principles of respect for persons, integrity, autonomy, advocacy, accountability, beneficence, and non-maleficence.
