Acquiring & Evaluating the Evidence During my experience as a registered nurse working in long-term care, I have come to see a problem with staffing. The organization has a high nursing turnover rate, is frequently working short staffed, and is always hiring new nurses. As I have been evaluating the evidence, based on the research I have acquired, there are many scholarly articles related to the problem, which has led to my PICO question: For all nurses hired onto a long-term care (LTC) facility, will implementing a thirty-day nurse residency program covering knowledge and skills needing to be successful in a long-term care setting, versus no additional residency program beyond training available now, help reduce nursing turnover, foster …show more content…

The article contains the same program design, same sample, evaluation approach, and the data collection process. In this article, the focus is in the findings, of the article, the authors added the Geriatric Institutional Assessment Profile to evaluate the cohort changes. The data that was collect was focused on answering four questions, in relation to, improve confidence, improve retention, job satisfaction, the organizational safety. After evaluating the data, the program itself was beneficial, the biggest challenge was staffing when the nurse preceptor and new nurse resident went to the education event. Other suggestion recommended to shortening the program and improvement in documentation. In the end, the article mentioned the need for the nurse residency program to be replicated. High turnover rates have led to negative outcomes in direct patient care. Nursing turnover has also led to an increase workload, effecting stress level for the existing staff members. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) reports a need to implement transition-to-practice nurse residency programs, which the evidence has shown that by implementing a nurse residency program has led to a decrease in nurse turnover. The evidence presented in the articles include the steps need to implement a nurse residency program in the long-term care setting. By reviewing the literature, researcher have identified features to include when implementing a nurse residency program: a defined resource person, peer support, and a mentor. The evidence includes actionable steps to aid when implementing the nurse residency program. The program includes, nurse competency guides and the NICHE Geriatric Resource Nurse content. Additional, education session includes, case studies and active learning exercises for a 9-week period, which involves a 19 days curriculum. The curriculum covers subject relating to age relating changes, depressing/dementia/delirium, falls, pressure ulcers, and nutrition.
