Hans Magnus Enzensberger’s, The Number Devil, is a mathematical adventure about a devil who teaches a little boy named Robert very important mathematical principles. Over a series of twelve dreams, Robert learns to love math with the help of the the number devil. The number devil shows Robert how to understand math and makes it easier by introducing mathematical concepts such as Christian Goldbach’s Conjecture and the Goldbach-Euler theorem. Christian Goldbach was born in Königsberg, Germany. He was the son of a pastor and studied at the Royal Albertus University. After graduating, he went on fourteen years of voyages. Over the course of his voyages, Goldbach met many mathematicians along the way such as, Leonhard Euler and many others. After his voyages, he continued to focus on mathematics and proved many theories. One …show more content…
major theory that he proved was his very own conjecture.
Goldbach’s conjecture is one of the most well-known theories in all of mathematics. His conjecture states that, “every even integer greater than 2 can be expressed as the sum of two primes.” Goldbach’s conjecture includes the Goldbach number and many other algebraic expressions. Goldbach’s conjecture is so crucial that it was even featured in Hans Magnus Enzensberger’s The Number Devil. During the 5th night, the number devil shows Robert the Goldbach conjecture. On page 98 of The Number Devil, the number devil gives Robert examples of how to solve and work Goldbach’s conjecture. The number devil uses triangles as an example to introduce Goldbach’s conjecture. The number devil makes Robert throw coconuts to make triangles. This example shows a perfect example of Goldbach’s conjecture because it shows that “every even integer greater than 2 can be expressed as the sum of two primes.” The number
devil then gives Robert examples of equations that demonstrate Goldbach’s conjecture. Goldbach’s conjecture gives Robert a better understanding of how to use prime numbers and how to make solving addition problems easier. Goldbach’s conjecture is very important because it has been used by many other mathematicians and it is still used today in many math classes. Goldbach’s conjecture has contributed and has helped many people of our world today. Robert still doesn’t like math after the first few nights, so the Number Devil shows Robert Goldbach’s Goldbach–Euler theorem. The Goldbach–Euler theorem consists of perfect powers. A perfect power is a positive integer that can be disclosed as an integer power of another positive integer. Perfect powers are shown to Robert on page eighty and one hundred and three. This theorem is shown to Robert on the fourth night. The Number Devil shows Robert examples of using this theorem, which ultimately helps Robert. In the end of the book Robert uses his new found math skills to solve a tricky math problem for his unexpectant math teacher, Mr. Bockel. In the end, after Robert has learned all of the math skills he needs to do well and enjoy math, Robert learns he can do math and not dread it. With the help of the Number Devil, and Christian Goldbach’s theories, Robert learns a valuable lesson, with a great teacher one can master math. By introducing mathematical concepts such as Christian Goldbach’s Conjecture and the Goldbach-Euler theorem, the Number Devil made it easier for Robert to master the needed math skills.
“Books and the movies are like apples and oranges. They both are fruit, but taste completely different.” -Stephen King. Stephen King was exactly right about that. The book called “Devil’s Arithmetic” has many differences compared to the movie. However, the theme in the movie and the book has been the same thing: ALWAYS remember. Furthermore, there are many other similarities that build up the theme of remembering. We must never forget what occurred during the Holocaust, because if people don’t pay attention to history, the event is doomed to happen again.
My book The Devil's Arithmetic By Jane Yolen is about a girl named Hannah stern who is a young Jewish girl living in New Rochelle, NY. She and her family, including her parents and younger brother Aaron are to in a Seder at her grandparent's home. Hannah does not want to be at the seder. She is tired of hearing about the past and is uncomfortable listening to her Grandpa Will talk about his experiences in the concentration camp."
The movie The Devil’s Arithmetic is about a girl named Hannah Stern who’s family lives in the United States after World War ll. In the movie they travel back in time to 1942 to show Hannah her family’s past because of the fact that she doesn’t seem to care about her family’s past. In doing this, she goes through the Holocaust with her family. Of course like all historical movies there are some historical accuracies and inaccuracies, although this is a very well representation of the Holocaust.
Devil in the Grove is a non-fictional book written by Gilbert King. King’s purpose throughout the book is to take an outside look on Thurgood Marshall’s life and the story of the Groveland Boys. Although, at first, the organization may cause the reader to feel that the story jumps around, in the end one should realize how its organization helped build the themes of this book.
1) Hannah reveals that her best friend is Rosemary, a Catholic girl, and states, “As if that matters (p. 46).” As Chaya, her new friends are in shock upon hearing this. Ester states, “My father will not even let me talk to a goy (p. 47).” Why will Ester’s father not allow this? Why is Hannah not bothered by it? Use text evidence to support your response.
The Salem witch craft trials are the most learned about and notable of Europe's and North America's witch hunts. Its notoriety and fame comes from the horrendous amount of people that were not only involved, but killed in the witch hunt and that it took place in the late 1700's being one of the last of all witch hunts. The witch craft crises blew out of control for several reasons. Firstly, Salem town was facing hard economic times along with disease and famine making it plausible that the only explanation of the town's despoilment was because of witches and the devil. As well, with the stimulation of the idea of witch's from specific constituents of the town and adolescent boredom the idea of causing entertainment among the town was an ever intriguing way of passing time.
Immigration and crime can often time combine due to the laws that are continuously created. The membership theory presented by Juliet Stumpf in chapter 2 of Governing Immigration Through Crime. Membership theory proposes that a person’s rights and privileges are only obtainable to those who are a part of a social contract with the government (Dowling & Inda, 2013, p. 60). It is believed that positive actions can occur when this takes place. Now, the membership theory uses two tools of the sovereign state for this to be achieved: the power to punish and the power to express moral condemnation (Dowling & Inda,2013, p. 60). When applying this belief to immigration law, legal and illegal have stringent explanations between them. As stated
Politics create a perception that illegal immigrants are all horrid human beings and deserve to be deported back to Mexico. There are a number of Mexicans who look to cross the border to the United States because they are in trouble and they must do whatever they can in order to survive. Regardless of this, citizens of the United States immediately ask for the heads of illegal immigrants and jump to conclusions that these people are crude and selfish although they are just trying to support their families. Luis Alberto Urrea tackles this problem regarding Mexicans attempting to cross the border in his book, The Devil 's Highway: A True Story. Urrea retells the story of the Yuma 14, also known as the Welton 26, and their attempt to cross the
Unexplainable brutality to Jews without an ounce of God given remorse? It’s sickening, and that’s how many Natzis felt. They could execute hundreds of people in one hour and party all night. This is the central theme of both the book and the movie the art, The Devil’s Arithmetic.
When Hannah’s head is shaved at the camp, she begins to cry. Gitl makes Hannah promise-“…promise me you will cry no more before these monsters. We will never cry again. ‘Never,’ Hannah agreed…feeling stronger because of the promise…(p. 95).” Why does this promise make her feel stronger? Support your response with text evidence.
The book Devil in a Blue Dress is written by Walter Mosley. There are lots of devils who appear in the story. Albright, Mouse, Carter, Easy and Daphne are devils without any questions because actions like hustling, and killing people show that they aren’t good people. From the story, we may easily conclude all characters are devils, but we should always think about who makes them commit illegal actions. When they were children, none of them thought about doing any illegal jobs. All of them wanted to be good guys. The real devil is the one that led them against the law. Who is that devil? It is money. Money connects the entire story, and it makes poor people want to do illegal things to make easy money. On the other hand, it
Can you imagine yourself locked up in a room with no doors? Similar to a room with no doors, there is no way out of hell if it was one's destiny. In the short story "The Devil & Tom Walker" by Washington Irving, the main character's fate is hell because of his wrong decisions in life, accepting a deal with the devil for earthly benefits. Irving reinforces his message about not making decisions that may damn your soul with the use of literary elements and figurative language. Wisely, Irving combines characterization, mood and point of view to perpetuate the theme of the story in the reader's mind.
While studying the diabolical figures in the devil, the idea of presenting Dracula came to mind. Dracula represents the devil in many similar ways. Dracula remains as a character in many diabolical movies and films. For instance, Van Helsing provides a good interpret of how Dracula remains noticed in the past and in present day. Although Dracula’s character obtains different views in every movie and film, he plays an important role in Stephen Sommers Van Helsing movie. In the movie, he acts as many different things. Demonstrating both the kind and evil inside, Dracula portrays his character as a mystery. Different views of Dracula throughout the movie include harsh, strong, powerful, evil, the devil, and unstoppable. The studies of Dracula

The early acquisition of mathematical concepts in children is essential for their overall cognitive development. It is imperative that educators focus on theoretical views to guide and plan the development of mathematical concepts in the early years. Early math concepts involve learning skills such as matching, ordering, sorting, classifying, sequencing and patterning. The early environment offers the foundation for children to develop an interest in numbers and their concepts. Children develop and construct their own meaning of numbers through active learning rather than teacher directed instruction.
