. A public nuisance is defined by in the Legal Dictionary as a person or group found guilty of one or many “minor crimes that threaten the health, morals, safety, comfort, convenience or welfare of a community.” Brown Baseball has been identified as a nuisance that falls under this description. A motion has been made to have a gang injuction filed agaisnt the organization as a whole which would then affect the entirety of its’ membership myself included. This definition of a nuisance is an improper guidline for what is a threat to society because several organizations exist that threaten one or many of the societal ideals listed in the definition of pulic nuisances that help the commuity. I was identified as a member of Brown Baseball because …show more content…
In addition to having no evidence of violent crimes involving our equipment we do not associate those who have been convicted of said crimes. Upon inspection of said bats that could be weapons oen would only find markings caused by baseballs and nothing else. This paired with an overwhelming lack of evidence should be reason enough to dismiss any suspicion of involvement with any violent criminal activity that is thought to have us at the center. It does not further our organization’s interests ot harm the community. The Brown Baseball members collectively agree that as a group we are singularly focused on winning an Ivy League baseball title. Harming the community and its’ members would not support this cause at all. We need the community to rally around our organization and promote an atmospehre of positivity in order for us to reach our goal. Being labeled as a nuisance would conflict with our goal so there is no reason that our members would be acting in accordance with a true
The first chapter of Policing Gangs in America is entitled, “Studying the Police Response to Gangs.” The primary purpose of the chapter is to establish how police agencies; Inglewood, Las Vegas, Albuquerque and Phoenix in specific, respond to gang problems in their respective areas. This chapter served as an introduction, giving a brief history of gang-related policing, how the public and media see the gang problem, research studies done regarding gangs and the recent declaration to shift away from suppression-oriented strategies as a result of overly aggressive actions toward citizens. Examples of this misconduct are given in the forms of gang units from Las Vegas, Chicago and Houston.
In 2003 as a response to communities with a large amount and growing number of youth gangs the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), a branch of the U.S. Department of Justice, initiated the Gang Reduction Program (GRP) (U.S. Department of Justice 2008). The formation of gangs is seen as a response to system failures and community dysfunction. As a result, one of OJJPD’s anti-gang initiatives is to make communities safer and have a pro-social environment (U.S. Department of Justice 2008). Furthermore, OJJDP plans to provide economic and social opportunities that gangs often promise to new recruits which are often obtained in an illegal and dangerous fashion (U.S. Department of Justice 2008). OJJDP believes that the GRP is capable of addressing the underlying issues for the increasing popularity and intensity of gang activity in specific suburban and rural neighborhoods (U.S. Department of Justice 2008). The program takes an integrative approach to dealing with the issue of increasing membership and participation with gangs. The following will discuss the program’s goal, theoretical basis, methods of operation, and overall effectiveness. After reviewing these major aspects of the GRP I will personally assess the value of this program and conclude whether or not the evidence supporting the program’s efficiency is strong enough for me to recommend it for implementation.
Times have changed - what was acceptable 30 years ago may not hold up in today’s world. Racially offensive mascots have created division - not unity. If teams like the Indians, Braves and Redskins were to change their names and update their branding, they could potentially benefit more than by holding on to offensive, outdated traditions. Why would a professional sports organization settle for fewer fans, less revenue, and an image that offends its own citizens? By...
Criminal activities and gangs have mostly always been an on going problem in the United States. Gangs and gang members are frequently involved with a variety of different crimes. The 2008 National Youth Gang Survey reported that there are approximately 774,000 active gang members in the United States (Egley, Howell, & Moore, 2010). The 2008 National Youth Gang Survey also states that there are about 27,900 active gangs in the United States (Egley et al., 2010). The active gangs in California have caused a major impact on the state in many ways. According to the California Department of Justice, approximately 300,000 gang members are living in California (Crawford, 2009). California also attributes more than 25 percent of all homicides to gang activity (Crawford, 2009). This is a staggering huge amount. The rise of gang involvement and gang crime has led law enforcement to issue and enforce gang injunctions. However, these gang injunctions do not completely eliminate gang crime and they have no effect after one year of being issued. Also, gang injunctions interfere with the lives of normal people in society.
The aim of this paper is to take an in-depth look at the emotion of disgust, and explore what role (if any) it should play in morality. The issue of what role disgust should have in morality is disputed by advocates and skeptics. In what follows, I will outline this dispute and show the arguments each side makes. Following that, I will take a look into Kelly’s view which takes the skeptical stance, but differs in how he comes to take that stance. Next I will show how Kelly uses his view to disprove the disgust advocates’ arguments. Finally, I will illustrate a promising line of argument that may give hope to the disgust advocates, in light of Kelly’s powerful skeptical stance.
In the realm of modern literature, a multitude of texts have produced a “thicket of information”(Goldsmith, “Uncreative writing” 1). In this “thicket”, all works seemingly blend together into one jumbled-up, problematic mess. To cut through this jungle of mundaneness, writers aspire to fabricate what they perceive as “creative” literature. There are even guides to doing this; though most are filled with cliché terms and phrases such as: explorer, ground-breaker, and going where no one has gone before(8). But are they all missing the point? Kenneth Goldsmith, author of uncreative writing and professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania, thinks so. He argues that the current literary world is plagued by the need to be unique. This need
Another portion of the gang problem that presents itself in neighborhoods is the public association of gang members. Juveniles wearing gang colors loiter in public areas, intimidating members of the public and further propagating their me...
MY FELLOW COUNCILMEMBERS, MS. MAYOR, CITY ATTORNEY TRUTANICH, AND FELLOW CITIZENS: Present day crime has detoured and disadvantaged our youth from an auspicious education. Gangs limit our children’s future by preying on their vulnerabilities. Nationally, law enforcement has cracked down and come up with new ideas to subdue gangs. The most debatable idea law enforcement agents have come up with is that of gang injunctions. A gang injunction is an order of a court directing gang members to refrain from an act or Acts. Civil law suits that allege in the grievance that the gang and its affiliates have occupied and used the specified target Area in a manner that institutes a public nuisance under California Civil Code sections
Medication non-adherence is an important healthcare challenge that has significant consequences in regards to patient outcomes, attainment of healthcare goals and healthcare costs. Patients are considered non-adherent when they do not initiate or abide by their prescribed healthcare recommendations. The three common types of non-adherence are primary non-adherence, non-persistent and non-conforming. Primary non-adherence occurs when although the healthcare provider has written the prescribed medication, the patient does not initiate the medication therapy. Non-persistent non-adherence occurs primarily due to miscommunication between the healthcare provider and the patient in regards to the recommended healthcare plan. In addition, non-persistent
Proponents of uniforms argue that the widespread violence in schools is due largely to gangs. They believe that the distinctive gang colors and symbols are used it intimidate non-gang members and reinforce gang allegiance. Gang members are often found wearing clothing with professional sports team logos on them. Children who wear this type of clothing do so only because they like it or because everyone else is wearing it. Jim Steinberg of the San Diego Examiner believes that, “They have become a fashion statement and sometimes a gang statement”(Sauewein 1). This is why so many parents want the schools to go to a mandatory uniform policy. Many parents believe that if children wear uniforms, the violence in schools would drop significantly. Long Beach Unified School District was the first large school district in the United States to implement a mandatory uniform policy. “In 1994, the Long Beach Unified School District in California became the nation’s first, large urban district to require all it’s elementary and middle school students to wear uniforms. School crime has plunged 76 percent since, says spokesman Dick Van Der Laan. Attendance is the highest it’s been since 1980. Can the uniform policy take this credit? “Very definitely,” Van Der Laan says.
A gang injunction is a lawsuit against an entire gang or specific members of a local gang (O’Deane, 2011). Gang property abatement concerns itself with specific property, targets property owners, and the specific gang members who are creating or allowing the nuisance at that specific location (O’Deane). These efforts are needed to hold gangs and their members accountable for their criminal activities (O’Deane, 2011). Strictly enforced gang injunctions and property abatements have the ability to disturb the gang and hinder their ability to conduct business (O’Deane,
Silence is one of the most powerful tools in society. Certain silences are revelations and more expressive than words. It enhances authority, as one may silence themselves in order to gain greater authority, or one will silence themself in fear of the high-power figure. Composers comment on the various aspects of authority through the use of techniques. Three texts that explore notions of authority are Nick Enright’s disturbing play, A Property of the Clan, William Golding’s dystopian novel, Lord of the Flies and a classic Australian coming-of-age movie directed by Bruce Beresford, Puberty Blues (1981). Enright’s play demonstrates the effects tragedy has on a community, in particular, the teenagers. Golding’s novel depicts a group of boys who’s thin veneer of civil behaviour is stripped away and are forced to govern themselves to survive and Beresford’s film exposes the confronting reality of abusive power males have over females of the younger generation. As seen in all three texts, individuality verses community is a war within social societies. Peer pressure plays a major role to influence choice for one to either, stand up by themselves or remain within the community circle. Along with peer pressure, there is the idea that a society without an authority figure is merely a non-existent social division. It’s apparent in texts one and three that the nature of abusive authority is predominantly at the hands of males. Authority can range from the power to inspire belief to the strict enforcement of obedience. Silence does strengthen authority but it is not the only factor.
Teenagers who bully, shame, or humiliate along with their victims often deal with negative psychological effects that could lead to suicide. According to merriam-webster.com the definition of humiliation is “to cause someone to feel very ashamed or foolish.” (Humiliation) According to merriam-webster.com the definition of bullying is “a blustering browbeating person; especially: one habitually cruel to others who are weaker.”(Bullying) According to merriam-webster.com the definition of shaming as “dishonor or disgrace.” (Shaming) As one can see from the definitions these words are closely related. They define the process of one person or group of people trying to make an individual or group feel like there is something wrong with them. The strong link between these negative behaviors and suicide is alarming.
Time is irrelevant, time is the most valuable resource that keeps the human experience rapidly and humans must realize that time must be taken for granted because nobody lives forever. Humans should not waste their time because time is key for a human’s experience. For an example I use a majority of a time when it comes to writing down an essay or spending time with the family instead of being inactive spending time within social media rather than meet the person face to face. Being able to spend time with humans and live rather than be alone at home wasting my time. In the mean time being able to relax and spend quality time with the family and interacting with other people is what life is all about. As time goes by and we tend to age we
