Novelty Never Lasts
One thing I have recently begun to learn in life is that the novelty of anything, given a little bit of time, no matter how fascinating or unusual it was at first, usually wears off quicker than one would prefer. I have found this to apply to nearly everything I have experienced in my life, and a frightening term comes to mind. "jaded." At least it should be frightening to a mere seventeen year old, with so much left to do in life. I am more than confident that this is just a passing phase, but nonetheless I have discovered how quickly the novelty of certain things can wear off from the experience I have had in the jobs I have held and from the repeated action of doing anything that I find enjoyable on a regular basis.
Through the jobs I have held both at a local pizza restaurant and movie theater, I have found that any novelty that pizza and movies once had is no longer there. I can easily remember back before my first job at the pizzeria when I savored the opportunity to eat pizza as often as I could. Now, thanks to the fact that I ate pizza almost every time I worked during that year, pizza just doesn't taste that good anymore. Whenever my family orders a pizza for dinner, I really don't look forward to it as much as I used to. Instead, I just shrug it off, "Pizza, big deal, what else do we have to eat?" This same loss of appreciation has happened with my second job as well. I have been working at
Sony Theater's Palace Nine for about four months now, and I can easily say that
I don't really enjoy an outing to the movies as much as I used to enjoy them.
Probably because I see them all for free now, but mostly because I know exactly how the movie theater works, I no longer experience the same thrill about going to the movies that I once did. I know all the ins and outs of the business I need to, and I am no longer fascinated by the movie theater industry. I find this loss of appreciation unfortunate to say the least, but at least I was making some money in the process.
I have also found that novelty can wear off through the repeated action of doing anything that I find enjoyable on a regular basis. A couple examples of this would be billiards and traveling. Last year, my friends and I would
At a housekeeping job, Ehrenreich works with Carlie, and Ehrenreich thinks that the bag of hot dog buns that Carlie carries around is something she finds in one of the rooms while cleaning. Ehrenreich later discovers it is, “not trash salvaged from a checkout” (44), but it is Carlie’s lunch for the day. Ehrenreich displays how the reality of low working class can be unimaginable, based on Carlie’s lunch of hot dog buns. Working at The Maids, Ehrenreich often experiences similar situations. Ehrenreich notes, “we grab lunch - Doritos for Rosalie” (80). Rosalie does not have an actual lunch, she could only afford a bag of doritos. What she didn’t eat that day of the Doritos will be her lunch for the next day. Ehrenreich creates sympathy for Rosalie, because she spreads out one small bag of doritos for her lunch for two days. The same day, Ehrenreich encounters young women whose “lunch consists of a “pizza pocket”” (78). The pizza pocket was not an actual pizza, it was dough with some tomato sauce on it. It’s devastating that people who are putting in hard back breaking work do not have enough to eat. Ehrenreich would not consider Doritos or “pizza pocket” as her lunch, but as a snack during a break. Other than food expenses, employees have to think about health
Eating the pizza instead of the salad seemed like a good idea at the time, but now one is stuck in this sloth like state hours later. It seems letting cravings control what and how to eat is not the best strategy to healthy living. Mary Maxfield, in her article “Food For Thought: Resisting the Moralization of Food” discusses her views on how people should eat. She believes people crave what their bodies need, therefore, people should eat what they crave. Maxfield claims that diet, health, and weight are not correlated with each other, and because of this, people view obesity as unhealthy, thus forcing them to distinguish “right, healthy” foods from the “wrong, unhealthy” choices.

First and foremost, the way I pick movies have changed. I am now a little more open to watching an older, black and white film. I am also more likely to select a foreign film with subtitles. However, I still have a hard time picking films that aren’t critically acclaimed. I am more willing to watch a black and white film but only if it is directed by Alfred Hitchcock or Orson Welles. The same goes for foreign films. I have also changed the way I analyze films. Now when I critically looks at a movie I find that I judge a movie based on more than the story and acting. I will looks and what goes on to getting that shot or how hard it must’ve been to edit some of the scenes. I think that it has made me a little more lenient when I review a movie. In the past I would think a movie wasn’t good if I didn’t like the story but now I can look past things and judge it by the cinematography and set design. I think I have started to understand that film is an art form and deserves to be treated more carefully than most people treat it. I now understand just how hard it is to make and be a part of a movie. I am still working on fixing my flaws as a viewer and I believe that it will come as I take the time to view more
Two years ago I started increasing interest in television, and watching movies. In addition, I grew quite fond of a sitcom created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady. The show is called “Big Bang Theory”. Anytime a good laugh was needed, I knew I could count on this hilarious serious. Also I found a new favorite movie. My new favorite movie is called “Notebook” it’s a romantic drama film. Anyone who has seen this movie probably had eyes filled with tears. The movie is directed by Nick Cassavetes, it’s based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks. This is the type of entertainment I take a strong liking to; each one has its own reasons.
This also took a huge impact on “Theatre Goers” (Those Long, Dry Intermissions). During the actual entertainment portion, they were occupied and content, bust as soon as the intermission began, they would find themselves with nothing to do. Since this was no longer allowed, they came up with new activities to pass the time. Some of these included; taking strolls through local art stores or going to get their picture taken at a phot...
In a movie theater, there are experiences that some will not have while at home and watching Netflix, such as the enormous screen, comfortable movie theater seating, and the theater speakers. Netflix can be used in a causal way with friends, but the main purpose of watching a movie is enjoying the experiences one can get from the movie itself. While at the movie theaters, the environment is completely different, because everyone is supposed to be quiet or else they risk being thrown out. The experience does not compare to the feeling someone gets when that intense scene appears, and they get immersed into the atmosphere of the theater. Movie theaters have the opportunity to give someone an unforgettable experience unlike Netflix, because the ambiance is truly unique and unmatched by anyone’s living

It can be difficult to re-create the experience of going to the movie theater. However, home theaters and in-home entertainment has become more popular as online streaming has taken a precedence in the industry.
I have taught myself several things in life, but one of them sticks out more than all the others, and that’s the lessons I have taught myself during my experiences with my first two jobs. These learning experiences I have had have helped me to mature and grow into an adult, and they have changed my life for the better.
