Unwilling changes or turning points are often employed by authors to aid the characters in acquiring better attitudes towards life. In the film Stranger than Fiction written by Zach Helm, turning points are used this way through Harold Crick. Harold’s realization of being powerless to avoid his fateful death provides a turning point that induces Harold’s transformation into a more emotional and passionate individual who lives every minute of his life to the fullest. The turning point is when Harold realizes he cannot avoid his fateful death after his apartment is being unexpectedly demolished by a crane when he is staying home to control his destiny. This very event causes Harold to live his remaining life by playing the guitar, by pursuing his love interest Ana Pascal using irrational methods, and finally by dropping the granny smith apple symbolizing the end of his transformation.
The turning point is when Harold realizes he is unable to control his fate and gives up trying to prevent his death. That is after his apartment is partially demolished by a wrecking crew mistaking the building for an abandoned one when he is staying home from work to try to control his fate in Karen’s novel. If we recall back to the movie, Harold is watching a science program of how animals were unable to control their destiny in the natural world on TV on his day off. A memorable quote in the show “The wounded bird knows its fate. Its desperate attempts to escape only underscore the hopelessness of its plight,” perfectly describes Harold’s situation of being powerless to avoid his fateful death, unbeknownst to Harold. In summary, it is the moment after Harold’s apartment is unexpectedly demolished by the crane that makes Harold realize he is not in control of his own destiny. This particular incident causes Harold’s transformation into an individual with an attitude of living his life to the fullest by causing him to start actualizing his life dream of playing a guitar, to start pursuing Ana who is of different worlds than him using irrational methods, and finally to drop the apple symbolizing the completion of his transformation. In the movie Stranger than Fiction the author uses an unwilling turning point to start Harold’s transformation into someone with an attitude to live life to its fullest. Arts come from life. Were we to apply the message in this movie to real life, we can be benefited.
He was tired and he felt he ought to be getting to bed” (Johnson 39) The fact that he has the mental capacity to analyze his different options in the situation (whether or not to stay up or go to bed) and conclude which one is the “right” choice reinforces….. This process requires a high level of maturity and awareness to be responsible enough to be able to consider something separately from what one prefers or wants. According to Piaget’s study “The Moral Judgement of the Child” children do not develop the ability to even begin to understand their role in relation to others and the rules until the age of 7 or 8, saying “(they) begin to concern themselves with the question of mutual control and of the unification of the rules” (Piaget 17). One may interpret this situation as Harold deciding for himself whether or not he wants to go to bed, thus taking control over his own life, but the intangible force in his mind that is driving him to go to bed does not come from the “child” side of him. The creative, whimsical idea to build a mountain to find his bed resembles the imaginative nature of a child, but the presence of a responsible, moral conscious resembles the much more mature, adult side to Harold. Although Johnson is trying to convey the freedom Harold possesses throughout his journey, there is some older, powerful force controlling his decisions, possibly showing how the individual freedom socialism strives for is idealized because there will always be some figure present with more authority.
Brent Bishop begins his change right before the crash. He decides that he no longer wants to be controlled by those around him, but to be a one-of-a-kind individual. He must face many obstacles through his journey, but he also has many enjoyable experiences along the way. The negative consequences shape Brent by raising his awareness of his acts and giving him experiences that he knows how to avoid, while the positive consequences show him things in life that he enjoys and wants to do, as well as giving Brent a more-in-depth outlook on life. He has become a new man because of consequences. They have changed his life forever, and will continue to do so for the rest of his life.
Into the Wild, a novel written by Jon Krakauer, as well as a film directed by Sean Penn, talks about Chris McCandless, a young individual who set out on a journey throughout the Western United States, isolating himself from society, and more importantly, his family. During his travels, he meets a lot of different people, that in a way, change his ways about how he sees the world. There are many characteristics to describe McCandless, such as “naïve”, “adventurous”, and “independent”. In the book, Krakauer described McCandless as “intelligent”, using parts in his book that show McCandless being “intelligent”. While Krakauer thinks of McCandless as being “intelligent”, Penn thinks of McCandless as a more “saintly” type of person.
The Stranger is a novel by Albert Camus. Albert Camus, a French, Noble prize winning author, journalist and philosopher, was born on the seventh of November 1913. He died on the fourth of January 1960. He was instrumental in bringing the philosophical views of absurdism to public attention. The Stranger was published in 1942 and is an example of the outlook and themes of Camus’s philosophy of the absurd.

The relatively new Pre-Crime system allows the government to operate an elite police force, which with the help of three very talented and unique human beings can see into the future and prevent countless crimes, especially murders before they happen. In Philip K. Dicks’s short story, The Minority Report, the world we live in is nearly infallible. With the reduction of violent criminal acts, people can live their lives in peace and prosperity without the fear of the pain and suffering, which usually accompanies violence. Likewise, in director Steven Spielberg’s 2002 movie re-creation of Dick’s renowned story, Spielberg also offers up an image of a nearly flawless society whose foundation is about to be tested to its limits.
The book, "Being There," is about a man named Chance, who is forced to move out of the house he lived in his whole life and his experience in the outside world. Based on the success of the book, the movie, "Being There," was made. The author of the book, Jerzy Kosinski, also wrote the screenplay for the movie. I think the major difference between the book and the movie is that in the book, we get to read what Chance is feeling and thinking, but in the movie, we only get to see his actions.
Harold Bloom, a well-known American critic explores Mary Shelley's Frankenstein to find true meaning. Throughout his essay, he gives answers to the lingering question of who the real monster is. He also paints a clear picture of a major theme in the novel, the Romantic mythology of the self. Through reading his essay, it opens up new light to Mary Shelley's novel. It gives new meaning to the monster and his creator.
The Stranger, a novel written by Albert Camus shows a world were being authentic is impossible. Meursault, the main character, is a strange person from the point of view of society and at the end of the book he is sentenced to death “for killing an Arab.” The society that judges Meursault as a stranger is the representation of our world, and Meursault is a person who tries to live his live following what he thinks is important in life; he is authentic. Meursault lives in a world really different from the real world. At the end of the book it is seen how the prosecutor, a “lawyer” of the state, defines Meursault as a person that is very different from the rest of society. The reason why Meursault is different from the rest of the world is that he doesn’t have the same ideals than society, and the things that society things are important Meursault considers them as unimportant. By having different reasons to live life, Meursault lives separated from society; he lives in a separate world. At the end of the book Meursault is obligated to come to reality. The judgment of Meursault let us see the impossibility of the. Meursault is not only himself but also a representation of the people how try to be different, and the prosecutor and the rest of the society are a reflection of our own world. The whole book is a reflection of our world.
French author and playwright Albert Camus once said, “He who despairs over an event is a coward, but he who holds hope for the human condition is a fool.” In the The Stranger and The Guest this philosophy is expanded on by demonstrating how those who do not conform to society are isolated, and portrayed as a threat to society because of their unique beliefs.

Taking a class in Death and Dying never sounded like a fun endeavor, but I still enrolled in the class with the hope that it would help me better understand how people deal with death. I have had a positive experience with this course, and was lucky enough to solidify some of the themes we discussed in class while reading The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. The story follows a young girl named Hazel Grace, who has a fatal form of cancer. The book follows not only her view of the story, but also involves her family, her cancer support group, and a boy named Augustus.
In James Joyce’s novel, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Joyce tells us a story of a young man who struggles with who he is and who he is to become. Stephen Dedalus was born into an Irish Catholic family with very strong beliefs. Stephan believes in God and follows the path he is taught. His young life is very doctrinaire, but he believes in his God. He follows the ways of the Church because he does not want to let God down. Later, as Stephan matures, he struggles with this life, his family, and even his Irish culture. He feels he cannot be the man he is expected to be, at least not in the eyes of God. Stephan’s true calling is not that of a priest or of the Church but of an artist. The dogmatic life Stephen has had since childhood helps him mature into a person he is not destined to be, until he frees himself to be an artist.
As college professors, do you ever consider exploring the world? Christopher McCandless once stated, “The core of man's spirit comes from new experiences.” This quote resonates throughout the movie adaptation, Into the Wild. Based on a true story in the 1990’s, the film explores a man’s existence and the meaning of life. Although released in 2007, I discovered the movie three years ago through the internet. Instantly, it became my favorite movie. Into the Wild describes an eye-opening adventure, an influential message, and a story that I, and possibly others, can relate to.
An existentialist represents their choices throughs their actions, opposed to with their words (Corbett). Therefore, someone who expresses the ideals of existentialism may be a threat to society because of their differences in morality compared to others. In The Stranger, by Albert Camus, Meursault was always looking to find meaning in his life because of everything that was happening to him at the time; and that is a key characteristic of someone embracing the ideals of existentialism. Sadly, through Meursault’s search for his inner meaning, he ended up taking the life of another man with very little realization of what he had done. In other words, existentialism it emphasizes individual freedom. Throughout The Stranger, the amount of existentialism views is abundant. The use of Mersault’s experiences covey the idea that human life has no meaning except for simple existence. The idea of existentialism in Albert Camus' The Stranger reflects through Mersault's life experiences with his relationship with Marie, the death of his mother Maman, the murdering of the Arab, and Mersault's trial and execution, all these events show that Mersault’s life of no meaning.
