John Dionisio HCOM 100 Shari Selnick 3 March 2017 Nonverbal extra Credit (HCOM) In this extra credit assignment, I was able to interact with old high school friends and meet new people the past week. However, I decided to change my daily appearance before I spoke to these individuals. Before I conducted my experiment, I chose a local Starbucks near my old high school to conduct this experiment. It was an interesting assignment because I didn’t know how much a person’s appearance can affect the understanding of one. I stayed in this local Starbucks at Pasadena and the attire I chose was very ‘nerdy’ and ‘uptight’. I didn’t want to change my personality because the point was that I wanted to ask the people’s first impression after the conversation. The first person, that I approached was an old high school friend named ‘Lily’. She was two years younger than me. Lily and I were really close friends in high school, and seeing a different appearance of myself affected her judgment. We talked about college applications and old high school experience. One thing I noticed was the lack of eye contact between us. I wasn’t sure if she didn’t want to talk to me. But after having the conversation with Lily, I asked her current impression of me. She told me that I looked very ‘responsible’. I asked her to clarify the response and Lily elaborated by explaining how college changed me for the better good. I decided to initiate the conversation by asking their opinion about “what liberty means to them”. This question was for my history assignment, however, I decided to incorporate the topic into my conversation. These college students were open to start a conversation. After talking about diversity and multicultural backgrounds. I asked them the same question about their first impression of me. I got multiple responses, one of them taught I was a liberal-rights activist, the other two gave the impression that I was just a genuinely a nice person. This conversation gave me the understanding that topics that an individual imposes can also contribute to learning what type of person one
