Middle Range Nursing Theory
The middle range nursing theory that is connected to the chosen phenomenon of interest is Nola Pender’s Health Promotion Model. This theory outlines health as a positive self-motivated state. It describes the various nature of patients as they interrelate with their surroundings to achieve a healthier life. Pender’s model concentrates on three subjects: individual traits and experiences, behavior cognitions and affects, and behavioral outcomes. The Health Promotion Model assumes that individuals alter themselves and their environment as they actively normalize their own behavior. The plan also suggests that health care personnel institute a part of society’s interpersonal environment, which gives them the ability to influence individuals throughout their lifetime. The initiation of self-altering conduct of the person-environment is vital for the accomplishment of a long term change in conduct. Bystander CPR is a skill that is crucial for the increased survival rate of cardiac arrest patients. Each individual patient should be offered and given equal care. The most effective and efficient plan of care should be made available without any bias present. When an individual is diagnosed with cardiac disease, he/she and the family members should be educated on the increased survival rate of bystander CPR. The most up to date evidence practice educational material should be researched and provided for everyone involved. Proper techniques should taught with return demonstrations for effective results. The proposed change project will introduce CPR training to the schools of Contra Costa County. By educating faculty, students, and parents about the benefits of performing CPR and providing basic CPR training tools, the 70% of people who feel helpless during a cardiac emergency will decrease. Using social media tools, like YouTube, allows a larger population to receive education. Overall, by allowing the project into schools, the number of people who are fearful and or unwilling to perform CPR will increase and thereby improve the chances of survival.
In order to understand middle range theories, a practical knowledge of the definition should be achieved before attempting to applying to concepts or classifications to the models. Middle range theories are defined as, theories that are fundamentally individual while incorporating a controlled amount of assumptions furthermore, having a limited characteristic of reality. These concepts are defined and may be tested (McEwen & Wills, 2011 p. 35).

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), over 350,000 people experience cardiac arrest outside of hospitals every year. Every second that a heart doesn’t beat dramatically decreases a person’s survival rate. CPR is a simple way to keep blood pumping through the body until medical personnel arrive. Only 46 percent of cardiac arrest victims receive CPR, primarily because most bystanders don’t have the proper training. Fortunately, schools are in a unique position to greatly improve that statistic.
Throughout this philosophy paper, I have explored what nursing is based on my personal values and beliefs as it relates to the body of work in nursing. I value the importance of holistic nursing and the care of patients being individualized for them and their family. Also, effectively collaborating among health care professionals to ensure quality care for patients. Additionally, the importance of health promotion as one of the main roles of nurses is being a teacher, since promoting health prevents illness and increases the level of health in clients. These principles will serve as a guide for my personal standards of nursing practice.

Depending on the issue or problem that is needed to be solved determines what theory needs to be used. Nursing theory started with Florence Nightingale. She believed that a clean environment would promote better health. Virginia Henderson’s need theory emphasizes the need to ensure that the patient’s independence is being increased while in a health care facility. She is a very successful and accomplished nurse. She has earned several degrees, served as a member on numerous committees, published several works, has been involved in several writings and research projects and has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards.
Theory’s responsibility is to provide nurses with standards that reinforce practice, as well as, for future nursing understanding and delivery. Basically, it provides nursing professionals with a tested way of thought on how to handle certain situations with proven results. The importance of nursing theories to nursing research is the knowledge offered gives nurses the foundation for communicating with others and best practice. Health promotion consists of all actions that encourage maximum spiritual, mental and physical functions despite of whether an individual is ill or well. Most of these plans are aimed at bringing positive lifestyle changes (Van Leuven, & Prion, 2007). A major core competency for all NPs is health promotion. Through regular screening, immunizations and counselling, NPs can guide their patients towards the goal of health promotion and disease prevention. As a future NP, my goal is to provide patient-centered, holistic care focusing on health promotion and sickness prevention. I also believe that an understanding of practice models like Pender’s Health Promotion Model will enable me to empower patients to obtain self-efficacy and behavior specific changes.
