Because we hear that slavery has been abolished we do not think that slave-like treatments are still being implemented by individuals. When I think of horrible treatments in the workplace the first thing that comes to mind is a custodian or a fast food worker dealing with rude customers. It was not until recently when reading the book Nobodies: Modern American Slave Labor and the Dark Side of the New Global Economy by John Bowe, that I really understood the slave-like conditions many individuals have to deal with. It is saddening that most of our meals that we consume and items we use every single day come from such dark, evil, unethical treatment of so many individuals. One being the vulnerability of the individuals, many of the individuals are emotionally unstable because they have to care for their families, themselves, are battling with substance abuse, many of them have a lot to lose which leads to the second factor, the people in major corporations with the power to exploit these vulnerable individuals for their greed. These corporations are getting away with exploiting these vulnerable individuals because of this third factor, we the public are turning a blind eye, it seems as if most individuals do not care or do not know what had to be done for them to get their meals or everyday items. I think in a world where plenty of individuals have access to social media, we should bring more awareness to the slave-like conditions corporations are allowing without any remorse. Social media is extremely powerful, I have seen individuals gain great success from social media. If social media has the ability to make an individual famous, social media has the power to bring the slave-like conditions in the American workforce to
