Sinning from Above In the Devine Comedy Dante’s Inferno Dante goes through nine levels of Hell. The levels of Hell have a specific meaning. Level one through five is lust, six through seven is violence, and eight through nine is fraud. In the second level of Hell he meets Francesca and in the eighth level he meets Odysseus and Ulysses. He wants to know what the people did to put themselves in that situation. There form of sin identifies with Dante with one being Greed and the other being Fraud. As an illustration, Francesca in canto v is found in the second circle meaning lust. In lust, the souls are blown around in a storm. Francesca is trapped in Hell with her lover Paolo. The second circle describes the sin of self-indulgences and passion. Francesca is in Hell because she committed adultery and failed to repent before she was killed by her lover’s brother who happens to be her husband Gianciotto. She was caught having an affair and this affair meant greed resulting in a weakness of will. The only good thing that came out of Francesca situation is that now she can be with her lover Pablo forever but only in eternal suffering. For this reason, Francesca identifies with Dante as incontinence as a form of sin. Correspondingly, Odysseus and Ulysses in canto xxvi are in the eighth circle of Hell …show more content…

the levels of Hell tell a story of the sinners. Starting with the first level being Limbo and ending with the last level being treachery. Francesca, Odysseus, and Ulysses all have something in common. The thing they have in common is that all their sins identifies with Dante form of sin. Those sin are fraudulent and incontinence.
