In the eighteenth century, Gothic literature was created as a subset of Romanticism. Gothic was seen as dark, while the Romantic was seen as light. The Gothic genre has four main traits: violence, psychological torment, supernatural beings, and isolation in the setting. The stories Nightmare at 20,000 Feet by Richard Matheson and The Devil and Tom Walker by Washington Irving, are prime examples of Gothic literature and show the four main characteristics. The story Nightmare at 20,000 Feet is about a man, named Wilson, who is getting ready to board his plane. After boarding, he began to become nervous, seeing that he “was a bad flyer.” He began to settle on the plane and then turned to look out the window. To try to dispose of the man, Wilson “jerked out this briefcase and threw it on the carpeting” he reached in and grabbed an “oilskin envelope” he then unwrapped the envelope and the pistol was revealed. Wilson opened the emergency exit and confronted the man. He “ flung his arm up, fired. The explosion was like a popping in the roaring violence of the air.” He climbs back into the plane and falls asleep. This story also has the characteristic of isolation for the reason that all the characters are in the air, in a plane in the middle of nowhere. Readers can make an inference that Wilson is suffering from a type of mental illness called schizophrenia. Nightmare at 20,000 Feet shows multiple Gothic elements throughout the story.
