While many people believe that trauma has to haunt people forever and they will never forget about it,with the proper healing and help from other people they are able to let go of their past and come to love the future. The renowned Doctor Peter A. Levine once said,” Trauma is a fact of life, it does not, however, have to be a life sentence.” The memoir Night by Ellie Weisel is a powerful book that details his life as a young teenager during the traumatic experiences of the Holocaust. In the beginning, Elli loses his sister and mother to the selection and has to survive and persevere the harsh life in Auschwitz and later was transferred to Nazi Germany. In this camp he was whipped and beaten and made to run for miles on end, but through this harsh time his father was lost due to total exhaustion, but not too long after this he was freed by the Allied troops. In addition, the book displays conflict throughout the theme of loss of faith. The author uses this specific literary element to develop the theme by explaining the way he lost his faith through many disputes and harsh situations.For example, the memoir states “Never shall I forget those flames which consumed my faith forever.”(105 Wiesel) This conflict of seeing the flames develops the theme of loss of faith because it describes how this conflict was the turning point of changing his life. This affected his life beyond that point in a harmful manner. Additionally, the author explains, ‘Where is God now? Eliezer's internal response is that God is that boy in the gallows.
