Night by Elie Weisel is an autobiographical memoir of the author’s experience during the Holocaust. He recounts his time in Auschwitz and Buchenwald, where he was subjected to various cruelties. First introduced by John Locke, the idea that memories and experiences shape who humans are as individuals has been a prevalent topic discussed and addressed throughout time, and remains pertinent to this day. Throughout the novel, Elie’s writings support the idea that experiences- often negative ones- mold who we are as people. Eliezer shows examples of how the experiences of staying in the concentration camps changed him and those around him. In Elie's novel, his writings suggest that our experiences, notably negative ones, shape our identities. The theme of Night by Elie Weisel is important because it gives an in-depth example of what unrestrained dehumanization and mistreatment does to a person's inner-psyche. Eliezer not only lost his belongings, his family, and a lot of his childhood; he lost a sense of who he was in the pursuit of clinging to his physical survival. As he endures the relentless horror of the camps, his struggle to stay alive leads to the erosion of his faith, his values, and his sense of self.
