This is a very common procedure for hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is when there is fluid build up in the brain. This causes pressure in the skull, and can damage the brain. Short term fix is called ventriculostomy catheter, this is used when build up is due to trauma, or for acute hydrocephalus. Long term causes need a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. Sometimes called VP. This controls where the liquid flows. Usually makes the fluid go into the abdomen. A ventriculopleural shunt redirected the fluid into the chest. A ventriculoatrial shunt shunt drains the excess fluid into the bloodstream. This procedure is very common. It helps a lot of people. and saves many lives. (hydrocephalus)
