Nelson Mandela improved the lives of black South Africans by recognizing discrimination, fighting against apartheid, and becoming an influential president. Nelson Mandela ran away to Johannesburg when he was 19. He ran away with a group young black men. Johannesburg was segregated before the young men arrived there, and many white people who lived there were intimidated by them. His partner was Oliver Tambo. As a lawyer, Nelson Mandela challenged racism. He was involved in the Defiance Campaign along with other members of the ANC. The Defiance Campaign was a movement that helped unite all races. In 1954, the Defiance Campaign was ended. An attempt was made to sue Mandela, but he won the case.
Although he was not sued, Nelson Mandela and 19 other people were charged with the Suppression of Communism Act because they were involved with the Defiance Campaign. They were sentenced to hard labor for 9 months, and they were suspended from practicing law. He was also forbidden to speak publicly and hold public office. He was isolated from his friends and other activists. After many years, these restrictions were removed, and he was finally allowed to practice law freely again. Nelson Mandela and a few other anti-apartheids made attempts to sabotage the South African government in order to end discrimination. Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life in prison in 1964. The trial was in September 1963. He was tried with sabotage. His codefendants confessed to it. The trial was called the Rivonia Trial. During this trial, Nelson Mandela did not deny his attempts at sabotage. Seven other people were sent to prison along with Mandela. He did not seek a second term as president. His successor was Thabo Mbeki. When he left office, Nelson Mandela retired from all active politics. Although he was done with politics, Nelson Mandela was still very involved in the community. He was a strong presence internationally. He was a symbol of peace, reconciliation, and social justice throughout the world. He remained involved throughout the world through The Nelson Mandela Foundation, which was established in 1999.
Throughout his life, Nelson Mandela showed his dedication to peace and equality through his words and actions. He was a founding member of the Elders. The Elders is a group of leaders from all over the world that was established in 2007. This group helps promote problem solving all around the world. This group has helped many people around the world. On Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday in 2008, countries all over the world celebrated. South Africa, Great Britain, and other countries celebrated his birthday to show their respect for him. This event shows the respect people have for him all over the world.
