Neil Percival Young is by far one of Canada’s most esteemed singers and songwriters in Canadian musical history. Neil Percival Young was born at the Toronto General Hospital in Toronto, Ontario, on November 12, 1945. Young was raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba with his father, which is where his passion for songwriting and music sprouted. In 1968, Young signed with his first agency, Reprise Records, where he made his solo debut and collaborated with the garage band “Crazy Horse to make Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere”. In 2010, Young received a Grammy Award and was also featured in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in 1995. Young has a unique singing and writing style, with his songs composed of poetic imagery and landscapes, making several …show more content…
Young and Palmer co-founded Buffalo Springfield with Stephen Stills, Richie Furay and Dewey Martin. Young wanted to move there because he thought it was the place of music’s core. Heading out, Bruce and Youn made their way to Sault Ste. Marie. Marie drove with three girls and another guy from Toronto to Los Angeles. Young quit the Buffalo Springfields in 1968 and decided to go solo. He decided to call his former manager to help him as a solo artist once again. This was a life-changing moment in Young’s career, as Elliot negotiated a deal with Reprise Records, whom Young is still signed to today. In the same year, Young fell in love with his first wife, Susan Acevedo. She was a hostess and was the owner of a restaurant called Canyon Kitchen, which Young used to go to every day. Susan introduced you to great artists in the area, and Susan made all of Young’s patchwork clothes, which Young still adores to this day. Unfortunately, because of how young the two were, they split up because of the unexpected pressures. Ironically enough, Young met his second wife, Pegi, at a local restaurant in 1974. Young described it as love at first sight, however, Young didn’t want to repeat the mistake he once made. Eventually, Ben was born in 1978, who had cerebral palsy at six months, was quadriplegic, and unable to speak. Amber Jean, born in 1984, has epilepsy, with her ex-wife Pegi. His eldest son, Zeke, was born in 1972 from an earlier relationship with actress Carrie
Scott stood out above the rest. At an early age, he could pick out songs on his mother's banjo, on which he was proficient by age seven. He had perfect pitch and could duplicate any chord he heard. He had the ability, which he retained until the end of his life, to remember tunes and fragments he heard years before. He incorporated them with his own elements into original compositions.
William Clark was ½ of the genius team that made their way through miles of unknown land, unknown nature, unknown natives, and came home with all but one voyager, who was killed of natural causes. William Clark and Meriwether Lewis were the first Americans to try and map the Louisiana Purchase area, and not only did they map it, they discovered allies, new plants and animals, and discovered new land and water routes that could be useful for future travelers.
Billy Joel was born on May 9, 1949 in Bronx, New York. He moved at the age of four to a small town on Long Island. This is where at the ripe age of four he discovered the art of music. Originally a classical music fan, Billy Joel honed his skills with classical piano training. This undoubtedly has had a major influence on his life and certainly his music. Growing up Joel was a big fan of such greats as Ray Charles, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Otis Reading. He was greatly persuaded into a career of music when he saw the Beatles perform on the Ed Sullivan Show. Amusingly Joel's first band was inspired by the uncanny opportunity to meet girls. The band was called The Echoes, but this was not the best of times for Joel because his parents were involved in a messy divorce, which included serious financial shortcomings. Joel even began working professional music gigs at night to help support his mother. Joel's schoolwork suffered a little and he began missing school way too often. He was subsequently not allowed to graduate with his high school class due to the number of absences. After high school Joel immediately joined a very popular band called The Hassels for which he recorded two albums with. Within two years Joel was on to a new band which he named Attila, and featured heavy metal drummer Jon Small who he played with during his time with The Hassels. Despite the previous release of two albums Joel still needed to bring in more money so he worked many music related jobs and gigs. He even wrote a rock and roll criticism piece in a weekly column for a magazine.
In 1979 a man named Joe Montana was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers. In just two seasons he led the 49ers to their first ever super bowl, and on January 24, 1982, the legend of “Joe Cool” was born. For many years Joe was seen as the greatest QB of all time. He would go on to win three more championships and 3 Super Bowl MVPs while completing many late-game comebacks. He was looked up to many people including a tall, skinny, unathletic kid from San Mateo, California who would grow up to surpass his idol as the greatest QB of all time.
Neil Young’s music is impressive to me mostly because of the wide span of genres it encompasses, and as such, the large amount of emotions it conjures. What’s interesting to me is how he’s viewed so differently from person-to-person; some may think of him as a country-rock star, complete with cowboy hat and toothpick, while others think of him as a hard rock icon complete with ripped jeans and a raggedy shirt. It all likely depends on how your own musical journey developed; “Heart of Gold” and “Rockin’ in the Free World” are two of his better-known songs, yet each one is played on very different radio stations than the other. I remember diving deeper into his body of work and being amazed at how much ground it covered; there are songs that are the epitome of despair and desperation, and there are also songs that make you giddy with excitement. How can one man be such a jack-of-all-trades with his music and sound completely genuine and inspired every time? Logic would seem to dictate that such a person would only manage to be merely good at everything he tries, not great. Neil Young, however, is an exception to that thought process, always searching for his muse, thankfully documenting the journey for all to hear.
Born on May 26, 1949, in Shreveport, Louisiana, Hank Williams, Jr. used his natural talent for singing to follow in his father’s footsteps. There have been multitudes of people who have made drastic differences in the United States, but a key figure in History is Cornelius Vanderbilt. Bruce Springsteen was born in Freehold, New Jersey, on September 23, 1949. His school life was one he regarded with hatred and bitterness. He spent eight years in a parochial school. Springsteen always felt like an outsider at school and was ignored by his classmates. He discovered music to escape the loneliness and “pain of a solitary existence” (Halbersberg, 1984, pg. 12). His first enlightening moment was at the age of nine when he saw Elvis Presley live. His mother then bought him a guitar but he was too small to play so he waited for five years on his dreams of becoming a big musician.
