Are there Negative Effects of Marijuana Use on the Body? There have been so many times that I have heard and have been told that “weed”, one of the most popular name for marijuana, is simply a “feel good drug.” However, the majority of the people who have said that do not know the negative effects marijuana can have on the body besides the positive “feeling good” part. Marijuana can go by many names such as dope, ganja, pot, weed, sensi, bong herb, and cannabis in various cultures. When dried, marijuana is mostly a green, brown, or grayish mixture taken from parts of the cannabis plant. Marijuana is smoked in rolled joints, bongs, and pipes. When THC enters the brain it targets brain cells called cannabinoid receptors, which is found in parts of the brain that influence pleasure, memory, thinking, concentration, and time perception; marijuana over activates this causing the user to have trouble with these actions.
When talking about the long term effects of marijuana, this drug hurts brain development, thinking and memory. A 2013 study conducted by the NIH found that marijuana users who began using as teens revealed reduced connectivity among brain areas responsible for learning and memory (1). The brain is a very important organ in the body. Without the brain, one would not be able to think, one would not be able to form memories both new and old, and a person would not be able to send commands to other organs and external body parts. Marijuana could also damage the encoding process the brain goes through when trying to form a memory. If the encoding has failed, then the individual could have just part of a memory or none at all.
