Feminism in the dictionary is defined as an “advocacy of equality of the sexes and the establishment of the political, social, and economic rights of the female sex.” (Oxford English Dictionary) However, today it is not met with the same positive manner that it should be. Many people have taken the values of feminism and taken it to an extreme that overall has a negative impact on the movement. Today, feminism is met with a lot negative reactions, and calling yourself a feminist can lead to some people thinking of you in a negative manner. Many women have taken feminism too far. This can seem very hostile and illogical to many people. This anti-male idea has caused men, even women, to go against the views of feminism. Many of the women have taken this negative spin on feminism are very outspoken. These women are the ones who are seen at rallies chanting anti-male insults. Some of these women aren’t male haters, but they want equal rights as men. However, these same women still want to be taken care of and expect men to pay for everything and buy them nice
Whether it is equal pay in the office or equal representation in the government feminism is not about bringing an end to male dominance. It is about having some say about your life and being judged on your work instead of your gender. It is about giving women the opportunity to ascend the leadership ladder if they are qualified to. These are all issues of civil rights. Women are not the only ones who deal with this kind of discrimination. Everybody has to deal with not feeling equal in society or not getting equal representation. People today are scared of seeming racist or sexist. (Hooks 55) Many live their lives walking on eggshells scared to speak their mind because they could offend someone. Even companies and schools that could be accepting people at the top of their field choose to accept lesser qualified people to meet a racial and gender quota to seem accepting and appealing. Even today white males, the target of many radical feminist groups, feel discriminated against minorities because companies have to meet a quota to “look good.” This quota system can be seen in many colleges. When applying to schools and viewing information about the school one of the first statistics shown is the percentage of races at the school and the ratio of male to female.
