"Is it the nose one week, the ears the next, and the breast the following week?" This statement comes from Darrick Antell, MD, a New York plastic surgeon concerning the rise in teen plastic surgery. Should teenagers go through plastic surgery to achieve the ideal body image for society and themselves? My answer would be no because a teenagers body is still developing, there are also many risks involved, and society now has put immense pressure for teenagers to have a certain look for examples celebrities. Plastic surgery should not be something a teenager should be thinking about at a young age and this makes it controversial because more teenagers are doing surgery. If a teenager is having a plastic surgery it should be for medical purposes …show more content…
The effects of an implant can include infection, scarring, hematomas and many other things. These effects occur during the first three years and another negative side effect is that implants usually last around 10 years which means the teens would need more surgery during their lifetime. When teens become women later in life it would be hard for them to do a mammogram since they have the implants inserted. The influence for teens to get plastic surgery comes from pop culture of today accepting plastic surgery from television shows and celebrity influence. Images on television portray the ideal image of how someone should look to be accepted as beautiful or pretty. An example lately in the news is Kylie Jenner from the show “Keeping up with the Kardashians” she is known for having fuller lips and other teens want the same look. “Many celebrities have had cosmetic surgery, and the American public is constantly exposed to images of these altered humans.” Teens need to realize that television and celebrities are not always real and it should not be the ideal image to look beautiful which can effect a …show more content…
Having a birth defect like a cleft lip can be encourage to get plastic surgery because it could affect the teen or child. A cleft lip is when a child’s lip or mouth doesn’t develop properly during pregnancy. Teens sometimes have trouble adapting to school because of constant bullying from their peers. The main issue for teens is being self-conscious when others point out their flaws and for some teens the solution is getting plastic surgery to cover the flaw and be fixed. An example of this would be the case of Nadia Ilse who at 14 wanted to get plastic surgery for an otoplasty which is the pinning of her ears. She was constantly bullied by her peers about her ears and after the surgery she felt more confident in her looks which in the end is good. “Vivian Diller, a psychologist and author of "Face It," questions whether plastic surgery is the right thing to do in bullying situations.” In some situations plastic surgery is not the answer when being bullied because sometimes it doesn’t solve the problem. Everyone should feel confident in their skin and be able to feel confident no matter the situation but in some cases plastic surgery is needed to for a medical purpose or to feel
After learning of the negative consequences that may, and probably will arise from breast implants, it is surprising that so many women are still getting them. It is major surgery and the benefits of having larger breast is not worth the unnecessary chance of death or serious pain for life. More work needs to be done on the study of breast implants because women need to know what they are putting in their bodies. Breast implant manufacturers need to be held responsible, and plastic surgeon should be required to make sure every woman is fully aware of all the possible side effects before she has any type of surgery done.
According to the article “ The History Of Plastic Surgery” by The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, plastic surgery began in ancient India where it was used to heal those who suffer from facial injuries. In the 20th century plastic surgery helped soldiers from the World War I and World War II reform their faces. However, after war, most people started looking for ways to ameliorate their looks and improve their physique and their only choice was cosmetic surgery. In today’s society, a teenager tends to be exposed to a lot of peer pressure that pushes him/her to hate his/her own body and makes him/her forget the importance of natural beauty. Dr. Ned Hallowell, a child psychiatrist, clearly supports the writers thesis by saying, on ABC news, that Plastic Surgery to avoid bullying and peer pressure is a bad idea “The idea of someone getting plastic surgery to avoid bullying seems to me as crazy and worrisome as if a black person were to go to a doctor and say, 'I want to become white...
Children across the world are born with some type of cleft, whether it is lip or palate. The number of surgeons repairing clefts has increased in the past decade, providing services for those in India with clefts. According to WebMD, it can be more common on some ethnicities, like Asian, Latino or Native American descent, than others, but it is less common in those with African American descent (WebMD). Cultures see it different ways too. According to Olivia Linderoth of Operation Smiles, in Rwanda, a baby, Challone, was born with a cleft lip. He’s just 4 months old and people in their village are afraid of Challone and think that if they just take a quick glance at him, they will be brought bad fortune. Challone’s parents want to fix this problem, though, to show their village that their son does not bring bad luck upon people. Many don’t know what causes clefts. Challone’s parents didn’t understand why their baby was born with a cleft lip but their older son wasn’t. His mom suspected it was a genetic condition because her cousin has an untreated cleft lip. They want to fix Challone’s lip, but they have to travel for hours to fix it and give him a normal life (Linderoth).
Shortly after the horrific death of Donda West, son Kanye West appeared on the Dr. Phil show to discuss the risks of getting plastic surgery. Donda died the following day after a tummy tuck and breast reduction surgery. Her plastic surgeon, Dr. Jan Adams is to blame. In another case, young Lori also went under the knife of Dr. Jan Adams and also appeared on the Dr. Phil show after a frantic experience. In Lori’s case, she wanted to fix one implanted breast because it was unusually saggier than her other breast. Dr. Adams knew what needed to be done to correct the problem. However, that’s not exactly what happened. Following the surgery, Lori experienced a terrible pain, and noticed that her chest had been greatly damaged. She also noticed that her left breast was much bigger than her right. When Lori confronted Dr. Adams about her problems he just looked at her and laughed. After seven long years of excruciating pain, Lori finally went to see another doctor to have the surgery redone. During the surgery, the doctor realized that there was something in Lori’s breast that was foreign because as he was cutting, his tool started smoking and the smell was horrific. Lori’s doctor found a piece of a sponge left behind from Dr. Adams surgery seven years ago, and the horrid smell was due to an infection that has increased greatly over time. Luckily, the infection hadn’t yet been life threatening. There are many risks of getting plastic surgery, especially when it is performed in other countries.
Cosmetic surgery is essentially not a bad thing. Some people suffer facial and body injuries or are born with a deformity which can only be corrected by plastic surgery. Cosmetic surgery can also be a life saver in cases of extreme obesity. However, some people-especially young females- are becoming too obsessed with their looks and body. The quest of finding the perfect body has led many to the operating table, opting for multiple cosmetic surgeries.
Ideally cosmetic surgery was considered a procedure that adults underwent, but as time goes on younger adults are becoming candidates for cosmetic surgery. The primary reason behind this younger generation turning to cosmetic surgery is because they are dissatisfied with their body, and or weight. Often young girls are teased, and as a result their self-esteem is affected. Many turn to cosmetic surgery with the hopes of making themselves acceptable in the sight of their peers. Younger generations of women who make the decision to have cosmetic surgery performed tend to want to have breast augmentations, and buttock implants. A huge influencing factor that leads younger women to seek these type of cosmetic surgeries are related to music videos,
She could go on fad diets or constantly exercise but still won’t be satisfied with her body. It’s not just about having a model type body. She might not think she has enough curves or that her nose is too misshapen. With that being said, this influences the likelihood of changing one’s own appearance. Because of this, it is no surprise that cosmetic surgery is on the rise with teens. Many will argue that physically altering one’s body during adolescence has too many risks involved. Teenagers might not be fully committed to a procedure, might be prone to infection or just simply are not physically ready for surgery. Others will argue that plastic surgery is a personal choice, and as long as parental consent is given then it is the individual 's decision to do so. Although everyone has the right to do as they wish with their body, teenagers are not mentally and physically prepared for plastic surgery and should not undergo a procedure unless it is for reconstructive
In conclusion, the benefits of cosmetic surgery differ between people and situations; any negative thoughts of others may have an effect on a person’s decision to have a procedure done, but it is for the patient to decide if changing their body is the right decision for them. Regardless of the influences on the younger generation, unrealistic ideologies of patients, and moral issues others may have, plastic surgery will continue to be a huge part of society. However, society should be focusing on how to encourage others to seek happiness in whatever they seem fit, rather than choose to destroy the aspirations of others who choose to build a perfect body for
Plastic surgery’s history goes as far back as 2000 B.C. Ancient physicians in India and Egypt practiced simple forms of plastic surgery. Why was plastic surgery important? Around the first century B.C Roman physicians practiced surgical methods to alter the human body. Roman culture highly valued the shape and beauty of the human body. Roman doctors also operated on gladiators whose body and faces had been severely damaged. People in Rome were afraid of scars on their back as it was considered shameful and depicted that a man had turned his back during the war and would use plastic surgery techniques to remove the scares.
In conclusion, we must avoid teenagers getting these surgeries and also we must avoid people having psychological problems getting these surgeries. In other situations, plastic surgery’s benefits can be given to the people who want them. For me, I would never want plastic surgery. I would prefer always to improve myself in other ways not surgery.
A person doesn’t have to go through an experience such as bullying, weight loss or an accident to undergo modification surgery. Plastic surgery is a trend that has many people on the tips of their toes but honestly plastic surgery is a good thing. A person should feel good about him or herself on the inside and out no matter what they look like. It does receive a bad connotation because some people do it for the wrong reasons. Undergoing surgery for those who have been bullied or teased can alleviate those harsh memories of being tormented in their younger years. Body contouring after weight loss gives the person who lost all the weight truly feel that they succeeded in something that a lot of people struggle to do. Having the same appearance again due to surgery after a horrible accident can improve a person life tremendously. Reconstructive surgery was created for the reason to improve and modify different areas of the body where people are
To many, the notion of a teenager undergoing plastic surgery is appalling and unbelievable. For others, such as eleven-year-old Julia, a nose job was able to help her lead a happier and more normal life. To eighteen-year-old Kristen a breast augmentation is a traditional rite of passage of the family. She claims that she “just wanted to look normal,” and that after surgery, she does. (Sweeny, 2009) In these types of cases, cosmetic surgery can be beneficial to the confidence of teenagers in what Ann Kearney-Cooke calls “an epidemic of low self-esteem among girls.” (Sweeney, 2009) Whether it is a physical deformity, such as protruding ears, or simply a lack of something that other peers have, such as large breasts, cosmetic surgery can help teenagers cope with self-worth in a world where beauty is ridiculously selective. However, aside from the confidence-boosting possibilities resulting from teen cosmetic surgery, there are many reasons why it should not be taken lightly for an adolescent. Although cosmetic surgery can potentially be beneficial, there are also many extreme risks for teenagers, including medical complications and in some rare cases death, and thus should be solely a last resort after meticulous analysis for serious cases. Furthermore, neither the adolescent brain nor body is even fully developed.
Cosmetic Surgery is a great discovery that has been around for many centuries. “The history of plastic surgery origins in the early 800 B.C. when surgeons in India restored noses to persons who had them taken off as a form of punishment.” (History of Cosmetic Surgery, 2008) Many people have used over the years cosmetic and reconstructive surgery to enhance their physical appearance weather it be for health problems associated with birth defect or problems that they have developed over the years or to even alter physical appearances for instance nose jobs and tummy tucks. There are numerous types of cosmetic surgery that can be done today in the United States, over the year’s surgeons techniques have improved dramatically. There are a number of pro’s and con’s that go along with cosmetic surgery, such as the amount of recovery time and the initial cost of surgery. Statistics also show that cosmetic surgery has grown so rapidly over the years it is phenomenal people who receive cosmetic surgery goes up by the millions every year. While there can be many related health risks due to cosmetic sugary, many times cosmetic surgery is necessary and its is made more affordable than thought to be.
As cosmetic surgery can improve the overall mental and physical well being of a person, and increasing self confidence and self esteem. The world of cosmetic surgery is portrayed through media and our favourite celebrities, showing men and women that it is okay to change the body or face they came into the world with.
