Jerome Kagan once said, “Genes and family may determine the foundation of the house, but time and place determine its form.” This quote recognizes that nature and nurture both have roles in determining why people are who they are. Nature states that people are defined based on genes passed down to them. On the other side, nurture states that people are who they are based on how their society and environment has shaped them. Nature versus Nurture has been a hot debate for many years. Both explanations hold some truth, but some people believe that one side is the only explanation.
The Nature versus Nurture debate has lasted for many years. Two of the most famous people who researched and created theories on this topic were B.F. Skinner and Charles Darwin. Skinner believed in the concept of nurture and thought this because of his research and experiments of operant conditioning. He is known as the father of operant conditioning and he conducted his experiments of conditioning by putting animals in a ‘Skinner Box.’ In a ‘Skinner Box’ a starved rat is put into the box. Most children have at one point in their life played in a sport. Some people have more athletic ability than others. Even though some people are not very talented at playing sports, they can work on their skills and coordination to become the best. They can hire trainers or join a gym to develop their skills. Athletic abilities cannot be only passed down; people must practice and develop their skills constantly. People are always getting better at sports with practice; for example, Olympians come back every four years and keep getting better than they were four years ago.
