Reconstruction failed to create equity between the races and the previous practices of discrimination and exploitation of the blacks continued. The reconstruction period failed to redistribute wealth and modernize the southern society. The question of land ownership remained the same with the black community unable to own land. This situation left the black community vulnerable to exploitation by the land owning white community in the south despite having been freed. Reconstruction notably failed to prevent violence perpetrated against the black community; especially through the spread of the Ku Klux Klan. The Native Americans shared many characteristics that were bestowed upon them by the characteristics of the Great Plains.
The Native Americans had similar cultures, economic activities and physical looks. They all had their subsistence from hunting and agriculture and used the existing raw materials in the plains for food and clothing. Due to the regular changes in the weather patterns of the Great Plains, the Native Americans changed their way of life in the same way through the seasons. They also all shared a similarity in language, currencies for trade and weapons. The belief systems and religions practiced were also similar for all the different Native American dwellers of the Great Plains. The Native Americans of the Great Plains defended their territory from the white settler’s expansion through similar methods. They fought back with military force, tried to settle through treaties and finally tried alliances with other forces to stop the loss of their lands to the white settlers. The federal government destroyed the cultures of the Native Americans hoping that; by westernizing them, they could be ‘better citizens’. The government had hoped to integrate the Native Americans into the wider white American
society. The text supports the idea that the American people were wary of the impact that the growth of big business could have on the society. However, the people were also very curious as to the benefits that they would derive from the growth of big enterprise. The result was a nation with a fear of the unknown but with a stronger urge to take the risk for the possible riches that big business could bring (Davidson). The typical immigrants to the US in the late 19th century were mostly unskilled and poor people from Northern, Eastern and Western Europe as well as from Asia. They emigrated fro a variety of push and pull factors such as draught and food shortages in their homeland, the attraction of American democracy, European population crowding and religious persecution in their homelands. These migrants were received with some hostility from a section of native born Americans. The natives feared the newcomers due to perceived political, racial and religious differences. At the same time, they were resented for the completion for jobs that they created and the low wages they readily accepted to take driving wages down for American workers. Teddy Roosevelt is seen as the first progressive president due to his bold actions and the time that he took power. He came to power during a time when the American society was ready for reforms. The actions he took such as siding with the workers unions over their employers were trend setting, as it had never happened before. He also took on big business dissolving monopolistic behemoths such as that of the almost full US railway ownership by J.P Morgan and James Hill. He undertook to fight corruption and supported environmentalists and conservationism. Through Laws, treaties and proclamations it becomes clear of the transfer of power between Native Americas and colonizing powers within the US and Canada. One significant treaty was Treaty NO. 9 in which Native Americans gave up their aboriginal title and land for money, hunting right, entrance into the christian school system and a Canadian flag presented to the Chief. In the 1830's the Plains Indians were sent to the Great American Deserts in the west because the white men did not think they deserved the land. Afterwards, they were able to live peacefully, and to follow their traditions and customs, but when the white men found out the land they were on were still good for agricultural, or even for railroad land they took it back. Thus, the white man movement westward quickly begun. This prospect to expand westward caused the government to become thoroughly involved in the lives of the Plains Indians. These intrusions by the white men had caused spoilage of the Plains Indians buffalo hunting styles, damaged their social and cultural lives, and hurt their overall lives. The lives of the Plains Indians in the second half of the nineteenth century were greatly affected by the technological development and government actions.

Salisbury also contends that American history did not simply begin with the arrival of Europeans. This event was an episode of a long path towards America’s development (Salisbury 25). There are consistent patterns or themes regarding Native American world views and the differentiation of cultural elements and society. Native Americans retained control of institutional and cultural orders against the assimilation effort because all aspects of Native American societies are interrelated, guided by the broader cultural world views. Each cultural or institutional element is, in fact, overlapped with other elements, so change in one element inevitably affects the broader cultural and social complex. While adopting to a new environment and small changes was possible in the West, where social and cultural elements are separate from each other, Native Americans were faced with conflicts and a potential, large disruption of the existing social orders.
Reconstruction has been brutally murdered! For a little over a decade after the Civil War, the victorious North launched a campaign of social, economic, and political recovery in South. Martial law was also implemented in the South. Eventually, the North hoped to admit the territory in the former Confederacy back into the United States as states. The 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments freed the African Americans, made them citizens, and gave them the right to vote. Despite this, Reconstruction was unfortunately cut short in 1877. The North killed Recosntruction because of racism, negligence, and distractions.

Before reconstruction was put in place, African Americans in the South were left roaming helplessly and hopelessly. During the reconstruction period, the African Americans’ situation did not get much better. Although helped by the government, African Americans were faced with a new problem. African Americans in the South were now being terrorized and violently discriminated by nativist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan. Such groups formed in backlash to Reconstruction and canceled out all the positive factors of Reconstruction. At last, after the Compromise of 1877, the military was taken out of the South and all of the Reconstruction’s efforts were basically for nothing. African Americans in the South were back to the conditions they started with.
Reconstruction was intended to give African-Americans the chance for a new and better life. Many of them stayed with their old masters after being freed, while others left in search of opportunity through education as well as land ownership. However this was not exactly an easy task. There were many things standing in their way, chiefly white supremacists and the laws and restrictions they placed upon African-Americans. Beginning with the 'black codes' established by President Johnson's reconstruction plan, blacks were required to have a curfew as well as carry identification. Labor contracts established under Johnson's Reconstruction even bound the 'freedmen' to their respective plantations. A few years later, another set of laws known as the 'Jim Crow' laws directly undermined the status of blacks by placing unfair restrictions on everything from voting rights all the way to the segregation of water fountains. Besides these restrictions, the blacks had to deal with the Democratic Party whose northern wing even denounced racial equality. As a result of democratic hostility and the Republican Party's support of Black suffrage, freedmen greatly supported the Republican Party.
What were the significant treaties, policies, and events that defined US Government and Native American Relations? How did the Native American respond to these treaties, polices, and events historically? How did these treaties, policies, and events affect the subsistence, religion, political, and social structures of the Native American people? I will answer these questions through the examination of two centuries of US history in six time periods that define clear changes in the relationship between the Native American and the US Government.
Following what was arguably the most turbulent time in American history; Reconstruction had far-reaching effects on a number of areas of life in the United States. In the Deep South, one of the clearest impacts could be seen on racial relations, specifically between whites and newly-freed African Americans. Legally, dramatic changes had been made at the federal level, providing African Americans with a host of rights that had never been offered them before. It was no wonder, then, that former slave owners in the South rejected these changes and rights, taking whatever steps necessary to keep African Americans down. The dramatic changes that took place in terms of race relations between African Americans and whites following Reconstruction had a far-reaching impact on society, with the shockwaves of these changes being felt nearly a century into the future.
Native Americans suffered hundreds of years of violence, discrimination and forced relocation from their land, during the European invasion of North America. After the Europeans arrive, Indian culture soon became endangered, a culture which developed distinctively shaped tools, sewing needles, clothing, jewelry and weapons.
