National Parks Research Paper There are 58 National parks in the US alone, and they have been running for 100 years. Tourist have helped the parks a lot and played a big role in their history, but they have also hurt them. Despite it’s obvious benefits, tourism in our National Parks has negative environmental effects. Some tourists fail to even realize that they can hurt they park and their plants and animals. Many things are affected by tourism. Almost everything in the park can suffer from the tourist. Some of the things that are affected are the plants/vegetation, the water, landscape, the animal life, geology, minerals and fossils, and the soil (portals.iucn.org). As an example about 2 million people visit Glacier National Park every year. The average temperature in Glacier has gone up by 2 degrees. So as a result the economic and environmental impacts of tourism are felt by Montana’s government and people. (Bonnie Singleton) With so much tourism of the National Parks some parks are becoming overcrowded and people aren’t getting as good of an experience as they should. The parks managers must find a way to balance open access with the negative impacts visitors experience and on the parks overall environment. With so many visitors the roads are always in use. Like the Lake Trout, who compete with the native Cutthroat in Yellowstone National Park. They are native to the Great Lakes but are considered invasive because they compete with native species. Many invasive species have been her for so long that people even forget that they are non-native. Here are some invasive species that are commonly know from all over the country. One of the most common ones is the tumbleweed, which is not even its original name. The tumbleweed was introduced when it was imported in some seeds from Russia. Others include the European Starling, the Burmese Python, and the Emerald Ash Borer. Some invasive species that are specific to a National Park are the Scot’s Broom in Olympic National Park, which if not contained will overtake the native plants.
