Words have quite a powerful impact on an individual’s emotions which therefore affects how that individual views the world around them and themselves. Natasha Rodriguez explains this in her well-written article “Who Are You Calling Underprivileged?” The article explains how Rodriguez received a pamphlet from the college, she had applied for. Natasha Rodriguez clearly proves that she is angry in her article “Who Are You Calling Underprivileged?” The quote provided from the article “What angered me most about the label was why college would ever use such a term. Who wants to be called underprivileged?” shows the feeling of anger. Rodriguez clearly states, not only for herself, but for anyone and everyone that has experienced disrespect and labeled with a term as degrading as underprivileged, that it angers people quite a bit. Not only did the article state “Help for Underprivileged Students” but it also only had a picture of students of a certain race on the front cover. The students on the front cover were Hispanic, African American, and Asian. This also angered Natasha Rodriguez for the simple reason of it is showing the world that these individuals with either Hispanic, African American, or Asian descendants are all underprivileged and need help which simply is not the entire truth. Even changing the picture to individuals of all races and ethnicities may have changed the outcome of this event just a little
In 1994 Renown College Professor Nikki Giovanni published a breath taking book that contains guidance to black college students on how to academically apply their selves in College, and she teaches them how to deal with the ignorance of white people from sharp tonged comebacks to gaining a Professors respect. Along the way The Article “Campus Racism 101” states Giovanni has acquired a tenure, she has a teaching position for life at the predominately white student body Virginia Tech. (Writing on the River 11) Nikki Giovanni’s “Campus Racism 101” gives advice to black students on how to succeed in College, appeals to Giovanni’s credibility, and appeals to the emotions of racism all in order to educate how black College students need to deal with ignorance on a College campus.

Economic inequality and injustice come in the same hand. Poor people are more likely to experience inequality and injustice. The negative assumptions of poor people are created by the media and politicians. Promoting economic justice by offering people living in poverty some form of social support. Barbara Ehrenreich found in her experiment the workforce for low-wage was difficult. Conley talks about the different types of social inequalities and how they have been unsuccessful.
Today in the United States of America people are both privileged and oppressed based on their diversity markers and social locations. These advantages and disadvantages are put in place by the people whom are in power, or otherwise known as the government and other leading officials. This is a major issue in today’s society that often tends to be masked by the many other issues within the country as well as by the privileged people. Many people who experience privilege tend to believe that privilege and oppression do not exist and that everyone has equal opportunity, but that is not the case privilege and oppression does exist and it can be seen every day in society. After a careful review of Dena Samuel’s “Matrix Model of Oppression and Privilege” I identified myself as rather privileged due to my social and diversity locations on her model.
She then immediately follows up with a way to fix it and demand respect. Shes trying to connect with the audience and shows that she has been in the same place, that she can relate. You can see that she has done her research, she uses plenty of statistics to give you a visual of what she is talking about as well as quoting people from organizations and giving them the appropriate credit. She mentions in 2005 at yale, her alma mater, 15 students sat in the admissions office until they were removed by police. These individuals were demanding changes to the financial aid policy. The backlash that Sotomayor experiences because of her decision to apply to and her acceptance into Princeton reveals how most Puerto Ricans experienced forms of racialization, or racial classification, by Caucasian Americans. Sotomayor experiences the culmination of years of racial discrimination and oppression when her school nurse asks with an “accusatory tone” and a “baleful gaze” how she got a “likely” and the “two top-ranking girls in the school only got a ‘possible’” (Sotomayor 102). She expects Sotomayor to experience “shame” under her gaze because her “perplexed discomfort” in answering her question is “clearly not enough” (102). The nurse demonstrates society’s common expectation for Puerto Rican and other minority students to not be at the same intellectual level as Caucasian Americans.

In One Friday Morning Nancy Lee, a beautiful, proud African American student, is given the Artist Club Scholarship but unfortunately it is taken away from her “when the committee learned that [she was] colored.” It is not right nor fair what Nancy Lee faces, but it is and has been an ongoing issue here in the world today. America has struggled with racism for over centuries now. What is racism exactly? Racism is hatred or intolerance of another race or races. We as a country tend to brush off racism and act as though the problem has diminished over the years but it is still very much an issue here in America. Our government and our people can pass as many laws as they want, but no laws will change us, the people. We the people as a nation need to be willing to change to better the world Americans live in. One needs to learn to be accepting of the others in this nation. It does not matter that on the outside one may look or appear different because on the inside everyone looks the same. Everybody wants the same things in life. One just wants to have a happy life full of love. One should never deny that to anyone because of the color of their skin pigment. Black people are paid almost half of what white people are paid, which forces them to live in low income communities which tend to be unsafe, and also put their whole family in danger. Due to their low income, they might not be able to afford health care which causes them to “lose more work because of illness, have more carious teeth, lose more babies as a result of both miscarriage and infant death…” according to William Ryan from Blaming the Victim page 648. People who have low income due to the wage gap tend not to be able to afford college compared to white people, which hinders their future and their ability to succeed. In fact, on page 214 in Shades of Belonging: Latinos and Racial Identity, Sonia Tafoya states “Hispanics who identified themselves as white have higher levels of education and income and greater degrees of civic enfranchisement than those who pick some other race category.” This shows how minorities are mistreated in society unlike white people. In the end, it doesn’t matter what your abilities are because if you are not white you are not treated equally. “If you’re not white, you’re black,” (141 Sethi). Anyone who is not white in the United States are seen as inferior. If you’re not white, you 're not treated as an equal. Non-whites are judged based on their appearance and are made fun of due to their accents. Numerous non-whites are harassed and are told “you are in America, learn how to speak English!” When in fact, there is no official language of the United States. According to Sonia Shah in Asian American? on page 217, Asians are paid less in the workforce even when they have the same level of education as whites. Regardless of whether non-whites receive the same education level as whites, they are still not equal, not even in the work
We’d all like to believe that we are equals within our society, but democracy doesn’t necessarily ensure equality. We all must work for a living, and the constitution would have you believe that racial minorities and women would have equal opportunities and equal wages as white men. But this is not the case. For many years people, mainly girls and women, have fought to equalize genders with some success, specifically in the work force. Gender inequality is not only a historic issue but one that still exists today in the form of the gendered pay gap.
The Wheel of Surya, by Jamila Gavin examines and presents a variety of different forms of discrimination within the novel. She explores this in various ways by comparing the differences between India and England whilst many types of discrimination occur, such as racism, sexism and a lot of disrespect against culture, gender, religion and tradition. Gavin also emphasizes the fact that back in the 1900’s (when the partition of India took place) the Indian Culture was not usually accepted in England which increased the amount of criticism and discrimination against unfamiliar religions. The way Gavin uses discrimination effectively in the Novel will be shown and discussed in this Essay.
Up until recent years, men and women have always had very distinguished roles in society. Men were expected to be the main financial support of the family and women the caretakers. However, in the past century these expectations have been adjusted to accommodate the social changes that came with women’s suffrage.
