My Story On a cold day in March 2013, I stepped foot onto the arena floor at Mizzou with one goal on my mind: a state championship. I was more nervous than I had ever been before. As the game started, my nerves eased and I let loose and played the game I loved most, basketball. As the buzzer sounded, the crowd went wild, my teammates formed into a group hug, smiling because our hard work had finally paid off, we were state champions. A few days following the state championship game, my mom received a phone call from a local AAU basketball coach that was interested in adding me to his program. I grew very anxious to play with my team again and hoped to have the same success we had the previous summer. In Kansas City, at our first tournament I was playing and jumped to grab a rebound and landed on my foot wrong. I immediately felt pain but knew that I could make it through the pain and just “walk it off.” I finished the rest of the tournament in extreme pain. After a few days, my foot was still hurting so I went to the doctor and found out it was broken and I would be out for the rest of the summer. I was extremely sad and disappointed not only that I wouldn’t be playing basketball but also that I wouldn’t be hanging out with my friends from the team every weekend. I learned a lot about myself that summer and became much tougher mentally. I learned that I could not live without basketball and what a major part of my life it was. The summer of 2014 was when I decided that I wanted to play basketball in college. I became more driven and determined to improve once I was fully recovered from my broken foot. When I look back, I think it was a blessing in disguise when I broke my foot because if it hadn’t happened, I do not think I would have realized my love for the game of basketball until it was too
