Police: Breakdowns that allowed corruption are still uncorrected, study finds. The chief concedes that mediocrity became a way of life at all levels of the department. The Los Angeles Police Department failed time and again to take steps that might have headed off the worst corruption scandal in its history, according to a sweeping self-indictment prepared by the department's own leaders. In a letter accompanying the long-awaited Board of Inquiry report into the corruption centered in the department's Rampart Division, Police Chief Bernard C. Parks called the scandal a "life-altering experience for the Los Angeles Police Department" in which corrupt officers took advantage of lax supervision to carry out criminal acts. "We as an organization provided the opportunity," Parks wrote.

It also has had a very big effect on many different countries because they often depend on the business that the drug trafficking creates. Since it has become such a problem, there have been many different efforts to put a stop to drug trafficking by different enforcement agencies. A website about drug statistics, drugabuse.net, indicated that the Drug Enforcement Agency or DEA, as it is well known as, makes over thirty thousand arrests each year dealing with the illegal sales or distribution of drugs. It is also believed that Mexico’s economy would shrink by over sixty-three percent if they lost their drug trafficking industry. Abstract This paper provides a historical overview of the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics (OBN), tracing its evolution from its inception in 1953 to its present-day operations. Established initially as the Division of Narcotics Enforcement under the Oklahoma Attorney General's office, the organization underwent several transformations to adapt to the changing landscape of drug enforcement. Over the years, legislative initiatives such as the Uniform Control Substances Act of 1971 further shaped the structure and responsibilities of the agency, leading to the creation of the Office of the Commissioner of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Control. A police officer’s duty is to maintain public order, preventing, and detecting crime. The concept of police officers, also known as cops, and law enforcement has been around ever since the ancient Romans had a theory that an organization of “peacekeepers” would reduce the crime and violence being committed. This theory stuck with society and is still around today. People of law enforcement have a mission when they step into their police car, that mission is to enforce the rules of conduct or law. Of course, accomplishing this mission can be dangerous. Often when a cop leaves his or her house to go to work worries start to set it, such as “will I be coming back home when my day is over” or “will a simple traffic stop go sour and someone ends up dead?” These thoughts are apart of the stress that comes with the job and most people are trained to deal with this stress.
A police officer must first have a reason to be in contact with an offender. This is usually because a crime has been committed. If the officer has enough probable cause, the offender will be taken into custody. In most cases, the officer will place handcuffs on the offender and then transport them to jail.
In dealing with today’s society we have a variety of different violent crime being committed. To be effective in solving, eliminating or reducing any type of crime we most understanding the root cause of the problem. These specialized units are created for the safety of the public. I feel by creating different specialized crime units is great because you can tackle each crime head on and have a better insight to what kind of crime and how it operate. The agency is made up of different individual with unique skill that brings credible insight to each crime.
