The narrative of coming from nothing and creating an empire is a key aspect Gatsby’s character and his motivations for always wanting more or the best. Much of Gatsby's life and young struggles mirrors the lives of the artists Luhrmann draws music from, most notably Jay-Z and Lana Del Rey. One aspect these three share is a significant name change which acted as a catalyst in their change of self. Gatsby was ashamed of his family and his family name so he “changed it at the age of seventeen and at the specific moment that witnessed the beginning of his career” (Fitzgerald, 98). Gatsby came from “shiftless and unsuccessful farm people” (98) while Jay-Z was raised by a single mother in the drug invested Marcy Projects. Despite coming from a fairly well-off family, Lana Del Rey also changed her name from Elizabeth Grant which allowed her to create a new persona separate from her rocky past. At age 14 Del Rey began drinking heavily and very quickly developed a serious addiction, resulting in her being sent to private school but, like Gatsby, this struggle was the motivation for success and some of her most impressive works. Luhrmann picked music created by artists who had experienced struggle and reinvention much like Gatsby adding further meaning to the soundtrack of the film because these mirrored difficulties serve to amplify Gatsby’s transformation and elaborate wealth and success.

He devoted his life when he was an adolescent to achieving immense wealth and rising to the upper class. When he met worldly mentor Dan Cody, Jay Gatsby saw the opportunity to that American Dream. He eagerly changed his name from James Gatz to Jay Gatsby. He had expunged or at least suppressed all the aspects and memories of his past life including his parents. “His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people, his imagination had never really accepted them as his parents at all. To become something you are not is to reinvent yourself. Reinvention can occur at any time and for any reason. A person can only reinvent themselves as far as they are willing to go. Most of the time, characters in books can reinvent themselves easier than living human beings. That being said, in the novel “The Great Gatsby”, Fitzgerald writes about reinvention by talking about the extent one is willing to go, the cost, and how one Jay Gatsby attempts to reinvent himself.
The art of reinventing oneself is constantly seen throughout pop culture. It is seen in the reinvention of Miley Cyrus straying away from the wholesome good girl image to a provocative trashy controversial girl. Jay Gatsby’s mansion is the quintessence of the idealized American Dream; it shows all that true about the fact that from nothing, something great may come, but sometimes, this greatness can come at a price. “‘I suppose he'd had the name ready for a long time, even then. In chapter 6 of The Great Gatsby, a reporter comes to Gatsby’s door to interview him about his personal life. Jay Gatsby’s original name was James Gatz and he was born on a North Dakota farm but went to college in St. Olaf, Minnesota. He dropped out of college and later met the wealthy Dan Cody who hired him as a personal assistant. When Dan Cody died he left Gatsby $25,000, but his mistress prevented Gatsby from claiming it. After that, Gatsby was determined to become rich and successful. Later on, Nick visits Gatsby and is shocked to find Tom Buchanan there, and the next Saturday Tom and Daisy attend one of Gatsby’s parties. After the party Gatsby is worried that Daisy did not enjoy it and Nick tells him to give up on Daisy, however, Gatsby refuses and instead tells Nick about he and Daisy’s past.
In The Great Gatsby, many individuals are involved in a struggle to find themselves and who they want to be. Personal identity is a very challenging thing to define. Everyone has an image in their mind of who they want to be. These images are usually very different from the actual identity of a person. In this novel, Jay Gatsby’s search or struggle for a new identity for himself is an ongoing journey.
