With the increasing use of emerging technologies and the associated information security threat threshold, Ohio University has adopted the NIST 800-53 security control framework to support their regulatory compliance efforts. NIST 800-53 is being implemented to provide a comprehensive set of security controls. This control framework is responsible for instituting minimum requirements that meet approved standards and guidelines for information security systems. It provides a baseline for managing issues relating to mobile and cloud computing, insider threats, trustworthiness and resilience of their information systems. NIST defines the standards and guidelines to be adhered to meet the cyber security control that align to FISMA expectations.
This project must meet the requirements of DoD security policies and standards for delivery of the technology services. The first requirement we are to discuss is Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) which is a United States legislation that defines a comprehensive framework to protect government information, operations and assets against natural or man-made threats. FISMA assigned the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the responsibility of defining standards and security procedures to be followed and must be complied. There are nine processes NIST outlines to be in compliance with FISMA:
After the horrendous terrorist attack on the New York Trade Center a new Bill was passed by congress shortly after September 11, 2004. This bill is known as The Domestic Security Enhancement Act also called Patriot Act 2. This bill was designed as a follow-up to the USA Patriot Act to work in increasing government surveillance, detention and other law enforcement powers while reducing basic checks and balances on such powers. By the beginning of the year 2003 a draft of the legislation was available. Amongst the most severe problems the bill diminishes personal privacy by removing checks on government power, diminishes public accountability by increasing government secrecy, and diminishes corporate accountability under the pretext of fighting terrorism. Also the bill undermines fundamental constitutional rights of Americans under overboard definitions of “terrorism” and “terrorist organization” or under a terrorism pretext. Furthermore, unfairly targets immigrants under the pretext of fighting terrorism. (http://www.aclu.org/Safeand Free/SafeandFree.cfm?ID=11835&c=206)

Physical and environmental security programs are generally considered to be a collection of mechanisms and controls put into place that help ensure the availability of information technology capabilities. These programs protect an organization from fire, flood, theft, power failure, intentional, and even unintentional damage through negligence. Implementation of these programs at the organizational level can take place in a number of ways but most organizations choose to follow the application of a body of standards, usually set forth by an organization such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Once such body of standards put forth by ISO/IEC is 27002, Information technology – Security techniques – Code of practice for information secur...
Security of the companies data is one of the most important components which allows the business to perform its day to day operation using various networking devices, services that absolutely needs to be protected from intruders. Some of these devices include online transactions, the exchange of data between users and clients both internal and external and external web data needs to be secured. There are several polices that would need to be configured such as a web sever and firewall configurations. However, with these configurations the first and most important task is to identify any vulnerabilities or loopholes in security within the company. The company has both LAN (Local Area Network) and WAN (Wireless Local Area Network) and a web sever. These resources need to be secured at all times from hackers or anyone else by implementing the appropriate security measures.

Network Security is the protection of the computer’s network though out the entire infrastructure. It can protect very important information and computer files to help prevent theft, spyware, malware, viruses, and more. Depending on if you have a public or private network, can determine what type of security settings you need for your network. All people are different on what they want to have secured or not, but most people do not know how to prevent people or things from getting in their network. “You must have a general understanding of security terminology and specifications as it relates to configuring hardware and software systems.”(Roberts, Richard M. 599). That quote states that by knowing and understanding security terms and specifics, you can
Security helps the organization meet its business objectives or mission by protecting its physical and financial resources, reputation, legal position, employees, and other tangible and intangible assets through the selection and application of appropriate safeguards. Businesses should establish roles and responsibilities of all personnel and staff members. However, a Chief Information Officer should be appointed to direct an organization’s day to day management of information assets. Supporting roles are performed by the service providers and include systems operations, whose personnel design and operate the computer systems. Each team member must be held accountable in ensuring all of the rules and policies are being followed, as well as, understanding their roles, responsibilities and functions. Organizations information processing systems are vulnerable to many threats that can inflict various types of damage that can result in significant losses (Harris, 2014). Losses can come from actions from trusted employees that defraud the system, outside hackers, or from careless data entry. The major threat to information protection is error and omissions that data entry personnel, users, system operators and programmers make. To better protect business information resources, organizations should conduct a risk analysis to see what
Michael Coppola had five years when he starts to be curios of how the things worked, and when he was in fourth grade he starts to make wed sites, and at 17 years he starts hacking. The country spends billions of dollars for secure in the cyberspace and the cybersecurity experts aren’t good enough. The Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative (CNCI) says that one thing that we need is better cybereducation and more experts. The government think that they can find a new generation of experts by making cyber competitions like America Idol.
When it comes to protecting an infrastructure, careful planning and coordination needs to take place. Protecting an infrastructure takes an important security initiative called Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP). The United States critical infrastructure is protected by the Department of Homeland Security.
It has over 25 offices in the United States and its website states St Moritz offers many different types of security services. This includes Security Guard Services, Loss Prevention Services, Jewelry Escort Services, National Services, Investigative Services, Special Event Services, ATM Escort Services and other Specialized Services. St Moritz Security Services Inc. conveys its mission statement as: “Security service is not the same for every customer; therefore, St. Moritz does not offer a generic, pre-packaged service. St Moritz develops security programs while working closely with the customer to develop the program that most fits their individual needs. Standard Operation Procedures can then be developed and implemented so the security officers may understand the security needs for that customer.”
In recent years, many possible plans to enact government regulation to improve cybersecurity have been suggested. Most recently, in 2017, then U.S. president Barack Obama implemented the Cybersecurity National Action Plan (CNAP). The plan would have invested $19 billion in cybersecurity by gathering experts to make recommendations in regards to cyber security, help secure the government IT group, and encourage more advanced security measures (Daniel 1). However, while CNAP does present a way to solve the problem, it just adds another program that attempts to enhance cybersecurity: “It is the multiplicity of programs and division of responsibility that diminishes their effectiveness. At least eleven federal agencies bear significant responsibility for cybersecurity” (Cohen 1). Every so often, another cybersecurity program will be established, but former plans are seldom removed. This leads to a large amount of departments to share responsibility, which creates general confusion and limits each department’s power. Furthermore, widespread government regulation may weaken cybersecurity. Many fear that any regulation would not be flexible enough and would instead allow easier hacking (Ridge 3). If every system in the entire nation had the same security measures, it would be much easier to break into as by breaking into one system, a hacker a could break into everything.
The first thing that we must consider about Information Security is that there is not a final destination at which we can arrive. IT Security is an ongoing set of processes and activities that requires attention and expertise on a daily basis. It is important to understand that systems are not secured by themselves and it is our responsibility to maintain and improve them periodically as required. It is of vital importance to establish the appropriate mechanisms and requirements in order to support the company’s CIA triad. The following report will provide you guidance about auditing and hardening techniques applied though the 7 Domains by utilizing IT Security Best Practices.
The nation has become dependent on technology, furthermore, cyberspace. It’s encompassed in everything we deliver in our daily lives, our phones, internet, communication, purchases, entertainment, flying airplane, launching missiles, operating nuclear plants, and implicitly, our protection. The more ever-growing technology empower Americans, the more they become prey to cyber threats. The United States Executive Office of the President stated, “The President identified cybersecurity as one of the top priorities of his administration in doing so, directed a 60-day review to assess polices.” (United States Executive Office of the President, 2009, p.2). Furthermore, critical infrastructure, our network, and internet alike are identified as national assets upon which the administration will orchestrate integrated cybersecurity policies without infringing upon and protecting privacy. While protecting our infrastructure, personal privacy, and civil liberties, we have to keep in mind the private sector owns and operates the majority of our critical and digital infrastructure.
