Often when people think of mythology, they think of the gods and goddesses. However, there is a wide variety of mythological creatures. There are many different types of creatures in mythology including monsters, animals, giants, dragons, and automatons. Many mythological creatures are used in movies and books today. That is why knowledge of these creatures may be useful. The many types of creatures and the movies and books that they can be seen in today are what make mythological creatures an incredibly in depth topic. To begin with, most people are unfamiliar with the automatons in mythology because many people tend to focus on the monsters and animals. In addition, “Automatons were statues made out of metal of humans, animals, and monsters that were animated by the god of metalworking, Hephaestus. Some automatons were crafted by Daedalus, the Athenian craftsman.” (“Automatons”, n.d.). The different automatons include the Caucasian Eagle, the Hippoi Kabeirikoi, The Keledones, the Khalkotauroi, the Kourai Khryseai, and Talos. The Caucasian Eagle was a giant eagle the Zeus sent to feed on Prometheus’ regenerating liver. The Hippoi Kabeirikoi are four bronze horses made by Hephaestus to pull the chariot of Cabeiri. The Keledones were golden singing women made by Hephaestus. The Khalkotauroi are bulls that breath fire also made by Hephaestus and they were a gift for Aeëtes. The Kourai Khryseai were golden women Hephaestus made to attend him in his household. Lastly, Talos was a giant bronze man made to protect Europia. There were most likely more than just these automatons in greek and roman mythology but theses are the best known. In conclusion, there are numerous mythological creatures and countless movies and books to show them. There are several types of mythological creatures including monsters, animals, giants, dragons, and automatons. All of these together make up the creatures that have been seen in many movies and read about in numerous books. The mythological creatures are idealized in today’s modern interpretations, such as movies and books.
