In many movies today there is usually some form of mythological content. The movie doesn’t have to be related to mythology in any way, shape, or form. The movie Confessions of a Shopaholic is a movie that you would not expect to have any mythological content in it, but it does. In Confessions of a Shopaholic there is a definite hero archetype.
This movie has the hero archetype in it because it fulfills all of the phases in Joseph Campbell’s study A Hero with a Thousand Faces. The first phase of Campbell’s study is Departure. Rebecca Bloomwood goes through this phase when she gets all of her credit card bills and realizes that she is in major debt and needs to stop spending so much right away. She gets the call to adventure when she unintentionally gets a job as a column writer for the magazine, Successful Savings, by writing a drunken letter and sending it to the wrong magazine. The only reason Luke Brandon hires her is because of her great comparisons and metaphors for economics grants her critical acclaim, public success, and the admiration of her boss, Luke. After she gets the job Luke ask her to write a column on interest rates, and she does not really know what they are, so she goes to a bookstore and find a book called Money for Dummies. Her best friend, Suze, is at the bookstore with and her, and she finds a book called Control Your Urge to Shop accompanied with a DVD. They go home and watch the movie. She refuses the call when the guy in the movie, Derek E. Barton, asks questions about shopping and she answers no to all of them. The person that gives her supernatural aid is the guy in the movie, Derek E. Barton and Suze. Derek tries to help her stop getting the urge to shop when she watches his movie and Suze helps her...

...m to get back together. Then it gets even better because she finally has enough money to pay off her debt, so she goes to the bank and gets her all of her money changed into pennies. Then she goes to Derek Smeath’s office and sets all the jars of pennies out and waits for him to come in. When he walks in she says, “There you go; it’s all there.” Then she hands him a quarter because that was the change to her debt, and she is finally debt free.
In conclusion, Confessions of a Shopaholic is a great example of a movie with mythological content. It displays the hero archetype perfectly. This movie has phase 1: departure, phase 2: initiation, and phase 3: departure in it, and it also displays the sub-phases of the three phases quite well, also. This just proves that in almost any move, some form of mythological content can be found even if it seems out of the ordinary.
What is a hero? The book Mythology by Edith Hamilton has a lot of heroes and most of them have 2 things in common. The heroes are in their own ways superior whether it be strength, intelligence, and/or courage. The second thing they have in common is a quest that establishes their greatness and proving that they are good enough to be called heroes. The catch is that even though they may have the characteristics of a hero, not all of them are epic heroes.

Since the days of mythological origin to the origin of pop culture, various mythological stories have been adopted and presented to newer generations. Some of these presented adaptations of mythological stories have significantly been modified in order to be deemed entertaining by audiences in a pop culture generation. Thus, my study will seek to compare mythological hero's during their time to how they have been depicted in modern day. Moreover, my study will analyze the similarities and differences between the Greek hero Heracles and his replica character, Hercules, depicted in Disney's adaptation of this myth. Although there are few similarities between the two versions, the differences between Heracles and Disney's Hercules are prominent. These differences help modern day audiences relate more easily to the characters in the story. Furthermore, the alterations have enabled a new aspect of heroism to emerge since Disney tailors it's movies towards youth who can seek valuable lessons from animated movies. Disney's choices through these alterations will be determined by focusing on the main plot, characters presented in the movie, peripheral details, and the notion of being a "true hero" that Disney presents.

From the beginning of time, mythology has appeared to be one key method of understanding life’s confusions and battles. Within these myths lies a hero. From myth to myth and story to story, heroes experience what may be called a struggle or a journey, which lays down their plot line. Bearing tremendous strength, talent, and significant admiration, a hero holds what is precious to their audience, heroism. Over time however, no matter the hero, the hero’s role remains indistinguishable and identical to the position of every other hero.

Being one of the world’s most popular art forms, it was inevitable that these archetypes would find their way into film as well. In this essay I will argue that the films Pulp Fiction, Taxi Driver, Watership Down, and Trainspotting are all versions of The Hero’s Journey, consequently demonstrating just how prevalent these archetypes have become in modern cinema. In Mythology by Edith Hamilton many gods perform acts or deeds that contribute to his/her society. One of the gods we meet goes by the name Perseus. Perseus was the slayer of Medusa. He is known as one of the greatest Greek gods of all time. The Greek god, Perseus, demonstrates that he is an epic hero by possessing qualities, fighting for his people, and being aware of his morality.

In The Bible Among the Myths, John N. Oswalt opens up his book by establishing his expertise in the subject of the Ancient Near East (ANE). Oswalt started his study into the ANE at Asbury Theological Seminary. After attending Asbury Theological Seminary, he went to Brandeis University. This is where his fascination with the subjects and ideas of the ANE started to grow. Oswalt eventually went on to teach at Asbury Theological Seminary, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and Wesley Biblical Seminary.
In movies, novels, and life, people are named as heroes. The heroes we establish and the heroes we recognize, however, may not meet the criteria for a mythic hero. A mythic hero ventures forth on his journey, and comes forth from the hero’s path to greatness. Joseph Campbell, a mythologist who studied many of the great human myths and religious tales, realized, in studying these myths and tales, that there were certain steps that every hero went through. Campbell called this “The Hero’s Journey”; it is based on Carl Jung's idea that all human beings have an archetype. After Campbell studied a lot of the great myths and realized this pattern, he published his findings in his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Ever since then, authors have used “The Hero’s Journey” as an outline to tell their stories. “It is important to note that not all of these individual steps are present in every hero’s tale, nor is it important that they be in this exact order” (Vogler 20). The Hero with a Thousand Faces gives a sense of significance as it looks into the inner mind and soul. The author, Joseph Campbell, performs two extraordinary accomplishments: compelling his readers that myth and dream, those are the most effective and everlasting forces in life and a unification of mythology and psychoanalysis with a gripping narrative. One well-known example of “The Hero’s Journey” from popular culture is the Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, by J.K. Rowling. In the novel, Harry Potter, the main character, is the chosen one and “The Hero’s Journey” applies to his life from the moment he is attacked by He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named as a baby.
There is another type of hero that almost no one is aware of. In the poorest areas of the country, live mostly minorities and other ethic background. All their lives they’ve been expected to work harder and expected not succeed in life. Some individuals living in poverty with a determination to succeed work hard all of their lives to become what everybody doubted they could. Escaping the crime, drugs, and prostitution is enough to escape hell, even if they don’t go to college. Despite of their financial problems, drug and crime surroundings, or difficulties in the language skills, their desire to triumph fuels their persistence. Those who make it to success are the few living examples of the purest form of hero anyone can be. They are not only their own heroes but also the heroes of the poor children who dream of becoming like them someday.
