Myofascial pain syndrome is a chronic pain disorder. In myofascial pain syndrome, pressure on sensitive points in your muscles (trigger points) causes pain in seemingly unrelated parts of your body. This is called referred pain. Myofascial pain syndrome typically occurs after a muscle has been contracted repetitively.
Myofascial Release (or MFR) is a soft tissue therapy for the treatment of skeletal muscle immobility and pain. This alternative medical therapy aims to relax contracted muscles, improve blood and lymphatic circulation, and stimulate the stretch reflex in muscles. Direct myofascial release is an attempt to bring about changes in the myofascial structures by stretching or elongation of fascia, or mobilizing adhesive tissues. The

practitioner moves slowly through the layers to ensure increase efficacy as well as minimize discomfort. ART (Active Release Therapy) Active Release Techniques and protocol treatments address problems in individual tissues as well as in between tissues.
One tissue or structure can affect another structure biomechanically and it can also affect the other structure directly. Patient symptoms seem to be related to changes in their soft tissue that can be felt by hand. The practitioner will address this by identifying problems with motion, pressure or tension between adjacent tissues as well as observe how the muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves respond to different types of work to ensure an effective outcome.
Mobilisation (also referred to as mobilization)
Mobilisation is comprised of small passive movements, usually applied as a series of gentle stretches in a smooth, rhythmic fashion to the individual vertebrae or area to restore range and relieve pain.
The distinction between Massage, Manipulation, Mobilisation is important and each is used depending the type of patient as well as the location of the affected cause of pain.
Massage is the application of touch or force to soft tissues such as muscles, tendons, or ligaments, without causing movement or change of joint position. Manipulation involves twisting the neck or back to the end of range, then giving a sudden thrust. This procedure is often accompanied by a pop or click which is the result of the release of pressure in the

joint. Mobilisation on the other hand consists of small passive movements, usually applied as a series of gentle stretches in a smooth, rhythmic fashion to the individual area. These are usually applied at various locations on each of the affected vertebrae, and at different angles in order to relieve restriction in movement at any particular level of the spine. Lymphatic Drainage Manual lymphatic drainage is a type of gentle massage which is intended to encourage the natural drainage and flow of lymph fluid, which carries waste products away from the tissues back toward the heart.
Lymphatic drainage should ideally be used in combination with deep breathing exercises before and after the massage.
Pregnancy/Pre-natal
Massage therapy during pregnancy is a nice complementary choice for prenatal care. It is a healthy way to reduce stress and promote overall wellness. Massage relieves many of the normal discomforts experienced during pregnancy, such as backaches, stiff neck, leg cramps, headaches and swelling. Make sure your OBGYN doctor is okay with you getting a massage. if you have a high-risk condition, it may not be recommended.
Neuromuscular Therapy Massage
Neuromuscular therapy is a form of soft tissue manipulation that aims to treat underlying causes of chronic pain involving the muscular and nervous systems. This medically oriented form of massage addresses trigger points (tender muscles points), circulation, nerve compression, postural issues, and biomechanical problems that can be caused by repetitive movement injuries.
Deep Tissue
Massage Deep tissue massage is best for giving attention to certain painful, stiff trouble spots in your body. The massage therapist uses slow, deliberate strokes that focus pressure on layers of muscles, tendons, or other tissues deep under your skin. Though less rhythmic than other types of massage, deep tissue massage can be quite therapeutic, relieving chronic patterns of tension and helping with muscle injuries, such as back sprain. Medical massage is useful in addressing there specific conditions: Carpal tunnel syndrome Sciatica Pain associated with bulged or injured spinal disks (medical massage cannot 'fix' the disk, but can help alleviate much of the pain associated with the injury).
Physical pain is more easily addressed by the administration of medication or a non-pharmaceutical intervention like repositioning, or the application of heat or cold. Nursing care on a general medical unit is about patient and family centered care which is in alignment with Kolcaba’s Theory of Comfort. A large portion of the patients seen on this type of unit have multiple comorbidities and challenging social situations that require assessment of their past health history, their support system, and their current living situation. All of this is taken into consideration in multidisciplinary rounds where data that is collected is communicated to all disciplines and a plan of care developed for each patient. The unit which I currently manage assembles our multidisciplinary unit daily. Needs are identified and assigned to the team members who include social work, care management and therapies in addition to the nurses and the providers. Since the team meets daily there is an opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness of the interventions prescribed. Nursing care management is integral in this work as part of the assessment, planning, and coordination of care in the hospital
Graston instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (GITSM) is a tool used by therapist and chiropractors to help break up the scar tissue and replace it with fibroblast allowing for faster recoveries (Black 2010). A series of heat, GISTM, then strength and flexibility training are required (Black 2010). Numerous studies have been conducted, by certified therapist qualified in GISTM, to examine the styles and recovery periods after an injury. After going through the treatment, patients are measured by their range of motion (ROM) to see if the treatments were effective or not (Black 2010). ROM can vary depending on the region of the body that is being treated, but the overall goal of GISTM is to allow a person to get back to their regular routines they had before their injury. A study conducted by Logan College of Chiropractic shows that plantar fasciitis (foot) can be treated by GISTM on the first day of treatment (Daniels and Morrell 2012). Another study by Duke University shows that GISTM can be effective for patients after surgery that had an injury in the Patellar tendon (knee) (Black 2010). After several treatments, GISTM can, also, be used to treat a compression fracture in the lumbar (back) (Papa 2012). Each study shows the method of GISTM, the patient’s recovery period along with the methods of recovery.
Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a chronic state that causes muscles to tire and weaken easily. The meaning of the term Myasthenia Gravis is broken up, My means Muscle, asthenia means lack of strength and Gravis means serious. In an autoimmune disorder the immune system attacks parts of the body. The part of the body that is attacked by the circulation of antibodies, is the muscular system, and in certain receptors for acetylcholine on muscle cells at the neuromuscular junctions.
Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) is a musculoskeletal illness (which causes chronic pain) and a chronic fatigue disorder. It can also change sleep patterns and cause the following: digestive disorders, chronic headaches, painful menstrual periods, temperature sensitivity, morning stiffness, numbness or tingling of extremities, and even cognitive memory problems. The name fibromyalgia comes from "fibro" in Latin meaning tissue, "my" in Greek meaning muscle, and "algia" (also Greek) meaning pain.(source 5)
Kinesiology is a complimentary therapy used to identify and correct internal issues to relieve stress, allergies, and pain. Being described as a complimentary therapy, kinesiology is not meant to be a cure-all for the patient, but a secondary method of increasing positive results of the original therapy; this method however can be used as a primary or secondary form of therapy depending on the results for the patient and satisfaction with said results. During treatment the doctor tests 14 different areas of muscles balance, these major muscles and how they react are believed to uncover problems that need correction which cannot be found with any other testing (Rude Health).
Touch is as essential to a healthy and happy life as eating right, getting proper sleep, and exercising. With the world growing more technological, the need for healthy human contact is more important than ever. Massage and body therapies are an age old healing refuge for us in this fast-paced, stressed-out world. The practice of massage therapy is rapidly growing in the United States. It has so much to offer and is becoming more widely accepted by doctors and the general public. Massage is touching another person by such movements as rubbing, kneading, pressing, rolling, slapping, and tapping. This type of therapy provides circulation of the blood and lymph, relaxation of muscles, relief from pain, restoration of metabolic balance, and many other benefits both physical and mental. There is much historical evidence to indicate that massage is one of the earliest remedies for pain relief and for the restoration of a healthy body. It is said to be the most natural and instinctive means of relieving pain and discomfort. Massage has proven to be an effective method for treating many conditions for thousands of years and it will continue to be used for thousands of years to come. Massage therapy is a great treatment for the body and soul.
What is massage therapy you might ask? The title for it explains almost the entire career. Massage therapist help their customers by using the manipulative skill of touching to relieve pain stress, and many other discomforting factors. As the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2014) state, therapists help rehabilitate injuries, improve circulation, relieve stress, increase relaxation, and aid in the general wellness of clients. Therapists also soften issues of the body and knead muscles. They promote general wellness and provide treatment for injuries. Massage therapists may use lotions and oils and massage tables or chairs as Bureau of Labor Statistics (2014) writes. Massages can last as short as 5-10 minutes or even longer than an hour. These are
Massage has been practiced through many centuries and has been used for a number of reasons from medical treatments to general relaxation therapies. Lots of styles have been developed throughout the years and therapists have adapted their personalised treatments using routines, methods and mediums to create the effects and feelings that they are looking to achieve for their clients. Massage includes the therapist using mainly their hands, elbows and arms to manipulate the body’s muscle tissues. There are many types of massage however the main one we have looked at as a class is Swedish massage. This form of massage includes five main movement groups. These groups include effleurage, petrissage, tapotement, vibration and friction. Each of these movements can be used in many different ways to create specific effects and benefits for the individual client. Effleurage consists mainly of light, long, sweeping movements allowing the hands to softly run over the surface of the skin. This movement is used for application of mass...
This describes muscles on one side of a joint relaxing to accommodate contraction on the other side of that joint.
This concept is taken from Block 4, Module 11 which is entitled as ‘Assessment of musculoskeletal system’.
Myofascial Release (MFR) is defined as a hands-on soft tissue stretching technique that involves manipulating the muscles and the fascial covering.1 MFR is performed by a trained professional who applies a gentle yet progressive stretch where-by the amount of time for which the technique is applied, the direction in which the stretch is applied, and the force with which it is applied are all dependent upon the patient’s physical response to the treatment.2,3 Ultimately, it is what the therapist feels, the end-feel, that guides the treatment through a series of stretches and manipulations attempting to reach maximum relaxation of tight tissues.2 Due to muscles and fascia being interconnected throughout the entire body, MFR is thought to be a whole body treatment.2 This theory explains why, often times, a therapist might treat an unaffected area and provide relief in the area of the patient’s complaint.2 Furthermore, this also explains why a treatment session to one area may cause symptoms to surface in an unrelated area.2 For these reasons, it is very important for therapists to set appropriate expectations regarding the treatment and the effects thereof.2
First of all, what is Myofascial compression therapy (MCT) and does it have an immediate effect on the body? Lets start with a short breakdown of the word myofascia. Myo means Muscle and Fascia = everything else. According to Boston, 2007, fascia is defined as: ‘The soft tissue component of the connective tissue system. The fibrous connective tissue, aponeuroses, ligaments, tendons, retinacula, joint capsule, the epineurium, the meninges, periosteal and all the endomysial and intramuscular fibers of myofasia is grouped under this definition. Paoletti, 2006, state that “fascia functions as the body’s first line of defense against pathogenic agents and infection ” (pg.170). Movement restrictions originates within the soft tissue of the body. Travell and Simons, 1999, suggested that the body adapts by laying down myofacsial trigger points (MTrPs). ‘Myofacial trigger points have been found to decrease the range of motion because of pain’, Macdonald, 1980. The good news is that these trigger points can be relieved. If applying MCT techniques and its various approaches can help the body to release these trigger points to adapt and improve athletic performance, increase range of motion and alleviate pain as opposed to doing the regular static stretching, it might be worth exploring.

In many cases, an injury is caused by a range of factors working together. For example, persistent back pain may be triggered by a combination of poor posture, being overweight, repetitive work-related activities and incorrect technique when playing sport. Exercise is the most widely used and best known type of physical therapy. Depending on the patient's condition, exercises may be performed by the patient alone or with the therapist's help, or with the therapist moving the patient's limbs. Exercise equipment for physical therapy could include an exercise table or mat, a stationary bicycle, walking aids, a wheelchair, practice stairs, parallel bars, and pulleys and weights. Heat treatment is used to stimulate the patient's circulation, relax muscles, and relieve pain. Cold treatment is applied with ice packs or cold-water soaking. Soaking in a whirlpool can ease muscle spasm pain and help strengthen movements. Massage aids circulation, helps the patient relax, relieves pain and muscle spasms, and reduces swelling. Very low strength electrical currents applied through the skin stimulate muscles and make them contract, helping paralyzed or weakened muscles respond again. (TheFreeDictionary.com,
