I have been highly involved in language arts, reading and writing, ever since I was young. It has played an important part in my life as I’ve always been an avid reader. Books were my portal to the bigger world, a world full of imagination and different peoples and places. I transitioned from being a reader to a writer, and a big part of my growth as a writer has come from an organization called Writers & Books located in New York State, a group that aims to help young writers bloom through different classes that approach writing and words creatively. The people there have greatly encouraged me as a newbie artist writer with their enthusiasm for both writing and teaching. My experiences there showed me the power of words and what our words …show more content…
As a result of this reading, I felt buoyed by the freedom of speech and form that other poets expressed in their work and felt compelled to write something of my own. When reading the poems I found myself in the spaces of the heads of other people, other poets. One of the tasks of the poet is entrusting the reader to understand what is being expressed, and although everyone walks away from a poem with different interpretations of what it talks about, the poem nonetheless still stands as is, unaffected. What is spoken cannot be taken back, so poetry is …show more content…
That’s one of the major reasons why I enjoy free form poetry- poetry without rigid structure- because it allows the poet to say whatever needs to be said to fully express what the artist is thinking. It’s therapeutic. We get to say what we want to say however we want to say it, and enrich the lives of other people as well who may feel similarly or who enjoy the freedoms taken with language. I believe one of the goals of art is to create connections with other individuals who are like us yet not like us. Art embraces the individuality and uniqueness of each person and every mind. It allows us to be who we are without penalty. Of course, one may improve their craft through practice, but craft, I believe comes second when compared to the realization of expression and feeling. One who can express themselves fully must by default have a good grasp of the art form. Art and poetry are intangible things. What is poetry? It is marks on a paper, but yet so much more. In a way, a poem is poetic in concept. A motto I aim to live by is “Live Like A Poem.” Embracing individuality and our inherent worth is part of what it means to live like a poem, live like a poet. It is also about being
Poetry is a form of literature that uses aesthetic and rhythmic qualities; it is solely used to evoke emotive feelings in the reader in which to convey a message or story. This form of literature has a long history dating back thousands of years and is considered a literacy art form as it uses forms and conventions to evoke differentiating interpretations of words, though the use of poetic devices. Devices such as assonance, figurative language, alliteration, onomatopoeia and rhythm are sometimes used to achieve a musical and memorable aspect to the poem. Poems are usually written based on the past experiences of the poet and are greatly influenced by the writer’s morals values and beliefs. Poetry regularly demonstrates and emphasises on the
The poems facilitate the investigation of human experience through illustrating life’s transience and the longevity of memory.
Poetry is often created by an author’s need to escape the logical, as well as expressing feelings and other expressions in a tight, condensed manner. Hundreds of poets have impacted society throughout history through phenomenal poetry that, even with dark tones can be emotionally moving.
In today’s modern view, poetry has become more than just paragraphs that rhyme at the end of each sentence. If the reader has an open mind and the ability to read in between the lines, they discover more than they have bargained for. Some poems might have stories of suffering or abuse, while others contain happy times and great joy. Regardless of what the poems contains, all poems display an expression. That very moment when the writer begins his mental journey with that pen and paper is where all feelings are let out. As poetry is continues to be written, the reader begins to see patterns within each poem. On the other hand, poems have nothing at all in common with one another. A good example of this is in two poems by a famous writer by the name of Langston Hughes. A well-known writer that still gets credit today for pomes like “ Theme for English B” and “Let American be American Again.”
...s to show the authors’ deep meaning. I always feel surprised and amazed when I read the poems which can takes advantages of the several words to either create a vivid picture in the readers’ mind or convey the deep meaning, or encourage people to do something meaningful and never waste the valuable time.A good poem should tell peoplesomethingimportant.
What the poets do not realize is that they are able to make complete and whole pieces of artwork, yet they are sometimes too attached to them, so they cannot see the true brilliance in the pieces that they have created.
...asis help to convey the messages poets intend to depict. Emotions and thoughts cannot be easily portrayed. Through poetry, a long string of heady words, or the simple combination of three or four hit close to the mark for the intangible. Poems also serve to tell tales, and to entertain. Both Lewis Carroll and T.S. Eliot do so in their poems, “Jabberwocky” and “Hysteria”.
“Poetry tries to get at the emotions of situations. It's the most direct form of communication we’ve got.” (Gary Hyland) Poetry is our most direct form of communication because it attacks emotions to get its message across, author to poem, and poem to reader with figurative language of hyperboles, similes and personification. Tugging at heartstrings of emotions to connect the reader to its passages. “Introduction to Poetry” by Billy Collins and “What You Are Doing Now” by Gary Hyland, are two “poem on poetry” poems written in free verse using those literary devices.
In the movie, “Dead Poets Society,” John Keating, using the quote, "We don't read and write poetry because it's cute to give the idea that poem is using to express different thoughts and feeling in our society. Although it is an art of where we use rhyme words and sometimes cute phrase, poetry is an exciting art form because of the different ways we use poetry to express ourselves. We talk and communicate using poems. Although we like the way poems rhyme and the words the writer uses, we look for deeper meaning as we write and read poems.
Robert Frost once said “A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness.” “It’s when an emotion has found its thought and the thought finds words. Poetry is a vital language of the heart. Poems rely on the writer’s deep and intensive feelings toward a subject. Poems can help a person find their inner feelings that one could not express directly to someone, but only could explain with pen and paper. Poetry draws on the senses and the senses give deep access to the poet’s inside feelings. It allows a person to be free and clear, that’s why poems are so interesting and fun to write.
Poems have long been said to contain meaning that makes you scratch beneath the surface to get the full interpretation. While analyzing "She Walks in Beauty", I was in awe by how the author Lord Byron was able to piece together a poem that was so relate-able to the majority on the topic of love. The way we structured his poem, selected his words, in not only the word that was actually selected but the length of the word itself, was nothing less than magical. Byron was able to paint a vivid image in your head that carried substance to whoever has fallen in deep love with someone else before. Poetic forms combine with sound devices and imagery to create meaning by continuously placing an image in one's mind and by being able to control the overall tone of the poem.
Poetry in essence is a written artistic form of expression. It allows for writers to reveal their ideas and feelings in a very unique way. Wallace Stevens once said, “Poetry is a destructive force”. In other words poetry has power, I believe this is a very true statement. Another poet by the name of William Carlos Williams once said, “Poetry is a small (or large) machine made out of words.” I also believe this statement to be true, each aspect of a poem is important to its function as a whole, and if something is missing or changed it can no longer work in the same way. The poet Derek Walcott I believe knew these “rules of poetry” and modeled them in his own writing. For example we can see use of these statements in his poem “A City’s Death By Fire”.
This is a powerful statement because a poem has the power to brighten the lives of many people. The reason behind this is because of the messages hidden inside of them. The characters a poem could have in it can help us build our own character. “All that an artist or a Sperry can do is drive toward his purpose, in the nature of his materials”. This quote by William Carlos Williams explains that an artist has to make the complications of their perceptions clear in their writing so that readers can find meaning from reading the poem.
Great poetry tells a story in a manner unique and improved by the nature of poetry. For instance, Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” most definitely tells a story, but the method it is told is conveyed in a manner only possible through poetry. Usage of repetition, refrain, as well as highly detailed and connotative language convey the story, yes, but work alongside this to create the eerie and dreadful mood that is so very characteristic of Poe. All of the poetic devices are used tactfully and creatively to create a powerful sense of emotion in the reader, whether it pertains to the mood or theme. As well, excellent poetry is something that sticks with the reader long after it has been observed. The emotional state created, in excellent poetry, should remain with the reader due to how powerful it is. Likewise, excellent poetry should teach something, or change the reader’s views, whether that be of themself or the world at large. For the most part, I think I worked primarily to instill emotion in the reader through my poems, focusing on creating a theme as well as just discussing some of my thoughts on some
Poetry must be music in the form of words. Some poets believe the definition of poetry is in the music it creates. "Smooth or rough, with them, is right or wrong." Alexander Pope believed that a poem must be pleasant to the ear. A poem must follow certain rules. A poem can never "ring round the same unvaried chimes" and "[drag] its slow length along." Poems must "[whisper] through the trees" to please the reader's ear. For a poem to create music the poem must follow certain rules. What is the usefulness of a poem if it doesn't communicate any emotions to the reader in the end? It is nice to hear pleasant sounds but the goal of a poem cannot just be to produce pleasant sounds.
