Perhaps one of the most important things that future students will find with this poem is that it is likely the reason for stricter instructions on their discussion board assignments. In order for future students to be able to discover this one must know the historical background of The Unnecessarily Long Title for My Super Awesome Amazing Poem of Super Great Instructions for Online English Discussion Boards. The haiku was written on April 26, 2016 during the 14th unit of the grand poet’s English class, which is when the most esteemed poet stumbled upon a flaw in the discussion board’s instructions for that unit. The instructions clearly stated that the poems used by the students could be from anywhere and written by anyone. So upon examination of the haiku we can see that the marvelous poet decided that they would write their own poem for the discussion board. Such lines as “I wrote for this DB” and “The Instructions I found poor” are both evidence that the wondrous poet did in fact write this poem as an example of what happens when discussion board instructions are too loosely worded (1,2). This fact can also be evidenced by the line which reads “So this poem was born” which undoubtedly proves that the poem was written in response to a discussion board
“Unteaching the Five Paragraph Essay” by Marie Foley demonstrates how a five paragraph essay formula disturbs the thought process of the students and limits what they can write. A five paragraph essay is an introduction with the main idea, with three supporting topics showing the relationship to the main idea, and a conclusion summarizing the entire essay. Foley argues that this formula forces students to fill in the blank and meet a certain a word limit. She noted that this formula was intended for teachers in the education system to teach an overcrowded class how to write. While it is beneficial for the first-time students learning how to write. In the long run, this standard destroys any free style writing, new connections between a topic,
Kim Addonizio’s “First Poem for You” portrays a speaker who contemplates the state of their romantic relationship though reflections of their partner’s tattoos. Addressing their partner, the speaker ambivalence towards the merits of the relationship, the speaker unhappily remains with their partner. Through the usage of contrasting visual and kinesthetic imagery, the speaker revels the reasons of their inability to embrace the relationship and showcases the extent of their paralysis. Exploring this theme, the poem discusses how inner conflicts can be powerful paralyzers.
The most noticeable aspect of the structure of the entire poem is the lack of capital letters and periods. There is only one part in the entire forty lines, which is at the very end, and this intentional punctuation brings readers to question the speaker’s literacy. In fact, the speaker is very young, and the use of punctuation and hyphens brings to attention the speaker’s innocence, and because of that innocence, the
In Patricia Limerick’s article “Dancing with Professors”, she argues the problems that college students must face in the present regarding writing. Essays are daunting to most college students, and given the typical lengths of college papers, students are not motivated to write the assigned essays. One of the major arguments in Limerick’s article is how “It is, in truth, difficult to persuade students to write well when they find so few good examples in their assigned reading.” To college students, this argument is true with most of their ...

Throughout the poem, Brooks uses wealth imagery to show how when exposed to the unpleasant reality of poverty, the affluent, although well-intentioned, will refuse to help those in need. In the beginning of the poem, Brooks descriptively describes the wealthy women in Ladies’ Betterment League. While creating an image of these women, Brooks states that the women “are full,/ Sleek, tender-clad, fit, fiftyish, [and] a-glow..." (14-15) These well-off women who make up the Ladies’ Betterment League use their money to keep themselves well-fed, clean, and healthy. In fact, these fortunate women possess an excess of money to spend on themselves. The use of the words “full” and “tender-clad” create an image of comfortable, wealthy women who use their immense amount of wealth to
...in fact, seem insanely chaotic. Our mindless support of self-centred political systems, of abuse of fellow human beings of different nationalities - it may well have appeared quite insane to him. The poem, therefore, delivers a strong message of warning: we must develop a stronger awareness, a care of what is happening, lest we, the collective we - humanity, the 'Idiot', are left in the ruins of our effort, alone, forever.
To begin with, the poem is structured in eight short and concise lines. Each word of the poem is only one syllable, and may indicate that the speaker is not educated. It is
"Poetry is the revelation of a feeling that the poet believes to be interior and personal [but] which the reader recognizes as his own." (Salvatore Quasimodo). There is something about the human spirit that causes us to rejoice in shared experience. We can connect on a deep level with our fellow man when we believe that somehow someone else understands us as they relate their own joys and hardships; and perhaps nowhere better is this relationship expressed than in that of the poet and his reader. For the current assignment I had the privilege (and challenge) of writing an imitation of William Shakespeare’s "Sonnet 87". This poem touched a place in my heart because I have actually given this sonnet to someone before as it then communicated my thoughts and feelings far better than I could. For this reason, Sonnet 87 was an easy choice for this project, although not quite so easy an undertaking as I endeavored to match Shakespeare’s structure and bring out his themes through similar word choice.
Set in modern time, the play Haiku written by Kate Snodgrass is a thirty-minute drama with themes of unconditional love and deception, in the play Haiku, the audience looks on the life of a mother and her two daughters. During her time taking care of Louise, Nell discovers that sometimes Louise is more present, and when so, she is able to communicate with Nell by reciting haikus. After allowing this to go on for three years, Nell’s other daughter Billie comes to visit. During this visit, Billie is told the truth about her sister and how she has episodes of normalness
The poem “Always Something More Beautiful” by Stephen Dunn is certainly about running a race, but the speaker is also arguing that pursuing something beautiful can help guide us through life. Through the title, we can see that we should constantly look for more beautiful things in life. The poem begins with the speaker describing his experience before a race. He uses words like “best” and “love.” The tone is extremely enthusiastic. In the first line, he talks about coming to the starting place. This can be a metaphor for beginning our lifelong journey. The speaker also implies that we need to approach it with a positive attitude. In the next few lines, the speaker indicates being tested in excellence
It is a brand-new school year for St.Joseph High School. Everyone seems excited to see friends or to be engaged in the course they love. For me, I was very excited to be taking Math 31 with Mr.Abad being my course advisor. In the previous years, I was always fond of Mr.Abad’s teaching style because it always seemed to make sense for me.
Swimming through the river, like a red bolt of lightning, the salmon tries to find the place it was born at so it can spawn. It has learned this through the species’ trial and error, which is acquiring knowledge, one of the most important parts of a journey. As we’ve seen through many journeys, such as the poem by CP Cavafy “Ithaka”, and the migrations of animals like salmon, beluga whales, and horseshoe crabs, the journey is the most important thing out of an adventure. Although the destination still matters, the journey is where you gain all of your knowledge and your important items from.
Even though poetry is still taught in classes, students will only view it as a required subject. A majority of students do not find poetry interesting just from investigating on their own. However, when they are learning it in a classroom setting with their peers, they may have more enthusiasm about the topic. Yet, after these students learn about the influence that poetry has brought to our society, they are still inclined to explore their own writing style. There is nothing wrong with this, but this proves that poetry has strayed away from its actual literature and the value it
