The genocide class in which we had to go to the Holocaust Museum and in which we got to see the film My Neighbor My Killer were compelling learning experiences during this class. Assisting the Holocaust Museum and taking one point of view to talk about informed me on what I taught I already knew. Learning about genocide aided my understanding of the many injustices that goes on the world and the ones I don’t know about. It was interesting to learn the various genocides that there has been, including the Rwanda and the Darfur genocide. It caught my attention because I had recently learned about the Cambodian genocide from when I went to Cambodia. The approaches towards these genocides are thought-provoking. Rwanda’s tactic to make the killer and the victims live together were stimulating. I would like to come up with other techniques as well, to implement a citizen based justice system like the film My Neighbor My Killer. It is disconcerting to know that there are many issues that need to be fixed, however I’m only one person in this world. Many human rights’ matters seemed impossible to approach. Thus, I learned in other NCLC classes that only one person is necessary to create change. Simple things like saying disabled person rather than handicapped person could make a difference. Referencing a sex slave worker as a prostituted woman rather than a prostitute shows that there is comprehension of the topic. The only challenge would be me stopping myself from making a difference. It is also confronting to know that sometimes I’m not perfect and that I won’t be able to keep up with all I hold as true.
