My Literacy Journey

My journey with literacy has been a up and down process. Early on in my life literacy was just a tool used to go from day to day and make it threw my school work. I never saw myself as being one of those kids that could read for hours or write stunning essays. The building blocks of literacy were taught to me at my preschool, where they began to teach us the alphabet and taught us how to read basic books. We also began to learn how to write. One of my earliest memories were when my preschool teacher would say “ today is library day”. Around half the class would be excited and the other half would be morose. Which was not surprising to me but apparently it was to everyone else. Since I had always received good grades in school somehow without out ever truly understanding what I was learning in some classes. After finding this out I was able to improve my relationship with literacy, making it easier to read longer books. Instead of going for it and trying to read multiple chapters at once I learned I needed to take in one chapter at a time and take short breaks in between in order to give myself a chance to comprehend what I had just read. Finishing a book isn’t a race, it is about understanding what the main points are. I also worked with teachers to learn how to become an efficient writer. A common theme in my life at the time was pace, I needed to slow down in order to get my thoughts straight and write down my thoughts. When I read books now they are typically non-fiction books or biographies. I tend to enjoy reading about something that may apply to my life more than a fiction book would. So if I want fiction I will go for some sort of digital medium such as a movie or television. Simply because I can understand what is going on better with the pictures and actions. This may explain why I chose to be a Psychology major, because I enjoy reading anding writing things that apply to everyday life. If the book or paper I write isn’t helping me learn something then why am I reading it? A lot of the reading I do now is to better my ability in my chosen fields of Psychology and Criminal Justice. Whether I am reading the biography of a former police chief or watching a TED talk about forensic psychology, it is all done in order to prepare myself for the
