My complete name is Isabel Eliana Ayala Paida and according to my parents, they selected my first name from a book that my paternal grandfather had in his library, “The Most Significant Figures in History”; they found the name listed twice in the book. The first instance was for Isabel of Castile, the queen who sponsored the explorations of Christopher Columbus and the other for Queen Elizabeth II from the United Kingdom. My parents also said that they had read in other books the meaning of the name and how a name can have influence in the personality of an individual. My parents recalled that, in the book it was written that females with this name have a personality characterized by kindness, charisma, intelligence and individuality; a person …show more content…
According to Behind the Names, my first name is of Spanish origin, it means "God is my Oath" and it spread throughout Spain, Portugal and France, becoming common among royalty by the 12th century. It grew in popularity throughout England in the 13th century after Isabella of Angoulême married King John of England, and it was subsequently reinforced when Isabella of France married Edward II in the following century. It is the typical form of the name Elizabeth in Spain and Portugal, though elsewhere it is considered a parallel name, such as in France where it is used alongside Élisabeth. Moving forward, here in the United States, the Social Security Administration has recorded 114,699 babies born with the name Isabel from 1880 to 2015. Also, the name "Isabel" ranks #68 in popularity as a baby girl's name and across the entire United States a total of 3,650 babies shared my first name in 2006 …show more content…
My group affiliation is strong, however I am confident that my membership to the Latino group will help me, if the United States can avoid a violent clash of cultures and embrace diversity as a strength. The US can benefit from its increasing diversity because a multicultural and multiethnic America can have a competitive advantage in the global economy. It would build ties to all the regions of the world, America's racial and ethnic minorities and its members like me can help American businesses to understand the needs and preferences of people in other countries and within the United
“Choosing My Name” by Puanani Burgress is a poem that reflects Burgess idea of her identity and how it is related with her different names. Despite having three different names Chirstabella , Yoshie and Puanani, she particularly likes identifying herself as Puanani although it is not her “official name”. Strange as it sounds, I aslo have three different names: Basanta, Kancho, Xxxxxx. My third name Xxxxxx is my cultural name that I cannot disclose thus I have decided to write it Xxxxxx as it is made up of six letters. Xxxxxx is my favorite and preferred name because it connects me to my family, my culture and my land.

There are many reasons why people may feel self-conscious; in which, others may or may not, be able to relate to. “My Name’’ is the fourth chapter in The House on Mango Street and in this chapter, Esperanza and I share some similarities. Being named after a relative, born in the Chinese year of the horse, and a dislike in our own name are similarities we share in this chapter. [Esperanza] “In English my name means hope. In Spanish it means to many letters’’(10). Esperanza expresses a dislike in her name due to the length stating, that her name it is too long. When I was younger, I felt the same as my parents placed upon me three middle names at birth. I to felt my name was too long. I would feel embarrassed when my family would address me by my full name although, they would only do so if I was
Latinos In Action is an organization supported by the White House Initiative that focuses on empowering Latino youth to become leaders and conducting community service projects. This program originated in Utah, but was introduced to my high school at the end of my sophomore year, when a representative came to speak about the program. I was immediately engulfed and infatuated with everything that Latinos
It is in the solving of social problems in which Hispanics can be of tremendous service to the country. One of the greatest attributes of hispanics is the willingness to mix, and by doing so, have created cultural forms, new human relationships, and life styles. Because this, Hispanics can help look for solutions to barriers, prejudices, and stereotypes that have divided us as a
Immigration has always been an issue in the United States, which is often portrayed as harmful and as major threat to American culture. As a result, various anti immigration policies have been aimed against immigrants in order to prevent and preserve the miscegenation of American culture, such as English only policies. Among the largest minority groups in the U.S, are Latinos who currently compose of 15% of the U.S population (Delgado and Stefancic 3). Unfortunately, Latinos have been accused of taking American benefits, jobs, and have wrongfully been depicted as a result of not assimilating to American culture. Latinos are often accused of resisting assimilation, but what has failed to be acknowledged is that there are obstacles set in place that are preventing Latinos from completely assimilating. Among those greatest obstacles there is discrimination. Institutional as well as individual discrimination have prevented many Latinos from feeling a sense of belonging. As a result Latinos have been reluctant to assimilate. Another major component is proximity. Many Latinos are native to nearby countries which allows for easy communication with family members as well as their culture. Moreover, it also allows for a constant influx of immigrants that replenish and preserve Latino cultures and traditions in the U.S. Lastly, Latino movements are working diligently to promote unity among communities for the purpose of creating a sense of identity and pride amongst Latinos, such as the Chicano movement.
The two essays discussed in this paper are ‘My Name’ and ‘Shame’. Sandra Cisneros in ‘My Name’ presents a very strong point of view of how her name has different meaning and it gives her memories of her grandmother with who she shares her name and also regrets the fact that it is somehow related to the weakness she and her grandmother used to feel when they were supposed to be behaving in a certain manner because they were Mexican and were not given power and freedom. There name was a sort of reminder of the fact that they have to be soft and polite and quite because none of the meaning of the name represents something which is powerful and expressive and strong. Esperanza in English means hope while in Spanish it meant sadness and waiting and that inflicted nations of the society towards women.
Latinos have struggled to discover their place inside of a white America for too many years. Past stereotypes and across racism they have fought to belong. Still America is unwilling to open her arms to them. Instead she demands assimilation. With her pot full of stew she asks, "What flavor will you add to this brew?" Some question, some rebel, and others climb in. I argue that it is not the Latino who willingly agreed to partake in this stew. It is America who forced her ideals upon them through mass media and stale history. However her effort has failed, for they have refused to melt.
Catherine of Aragon was born on December 16th, 1485 and died on January 7th, 1536. Catherine was the first born daughter of Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon. Both of her parents later on funded Christopher Columbus’s long voyages to the New World in 1492. At a very, very young age of just 3 years old; Catherine was to be betrothed to Prince Arthur and married him when she turned 16, in the year 1501. Sadly, her husband died 5 months later and she acquired a very important title in her young life; the title of being the very First Woman to be an Ambassador of the Spanish Court in England. Soon after being the ambassador, Catherine was to be married to Arthur’s youngest brother, Henry VIII. Her title then went from being an ambassador, to a Princess, and finally to the highest title; a Queen. Catherine ruled England from 1509-1533 by the side of Henry. Catherine was painfully unaware of the fact that Henry was having an affair with his mistress; and soon to be wife, Anne Boleyn. The reason being for his infidelity was due to the fact that Catherine hadn’t p...
I call to action an immediate immigration reform NOW! Anti-illegals and Pro- amnesty Organizations Missions There are many organizations, interest groups, coalitions who oppose an immigration reform. These anti-immigration groups, share common positions, they feel that immigrants pose a threat to them they could be terrorist, drug dealers and criminals; they also worry about the use of public help from the government which they pay (Messerli, n.d.).
Do you think its fair that players are credited for what they do, when cheating the game? Mark McGwire excelled at the game of baseball and got credit for all of his accomplishments, yet he cheated the game and used steroids. Babe Ruth, considered one of the greatest baseball players to play the game of baseball, who never cheated and set a great example for all who play baseball. Baseball has drastically changed over the years, especially in the cheating scandals of steroids; Babe Ruth set a great example by excelling in the sport and doing it clean, contrasting with Mark McGwire. Their existence shows how society accepted honesty and doing it the clean way in Babe’s era and how society accepts the scandals and dishonesty of Mark’s era.
After Cathy had left her home a new kid moved in. His name was Meme Ortiz, but that wasn’t his name, but Esperanza tells us what his actual name is. “His name isn’t really Meme. His name is Juan. But when we asked him what his name was he said Meme, and that’s what everybody calls him except his mother” (Cisneros 21). This gives us a similarity to a vignette from the earlier part of the book called “My Name” in that vignette, it tells us of how Esperanza wishes
Isabella was born on April 22, 1451 to Juan II King of Castile and Isabella of Portugal. Her father died when she was three years old and her brother Enrique took the throne. When growing up Isabella received a high level of education, and was mostly cared for by her mother. When the time came for her to get married Enrique insisted she marry Alfonso V, however this is not was Isabella wanted and when Enrique threatened to imprison her. Instead she fled and married Fernando II of Argon on October 19, 1469. Enrique died in 1474 leaving Isabella the queen of Castile. Isabella ruled Castile with Fernando from 1474 to 1504; and I believe that she was an independent, transformational, task oriented leader that shattered the standard for women during her rein.
I was born and raised in the Dominican Republic and our tradition when it comes to last names differs from the one in the United States. In the Dominican tradition, each person carries two last names, but only the first last name of each parent would be transferred to a child. The first last name is acquired through the fraternal side, while the second last name comes from the maternal side. So my future children would carry their father’s first last name as their first last name, and then my first last name as their second.
The Latinization of America is already here. The ongoing public promotion by a White racist movement to become anti-Hispanic, anti-black and anti-immigrant amongst an older white working class , scared to lose their jobs and the certain diminish aging culture threatens to divide the United States into two the young working Latino versus the old, sick and unemployed White American with two different set of priorities and even more incompatible socioeconomic future . The endgame for American citizens should be to live in harmony, without bias against any race, color or ethnicity but this may be a utopia harder to achieve unless a change of heart takes place by the white nativist minority.
