During my first volunteer experience with the homeless population in Seoul, Korea, I had a chance to talk with various people about their circumstances and decisions which brought them into poverty. They had different backgrounds and interesting stories. However, the stories from the homeless had one thing in common; most of them lost their job during the 1997 Asian crisis, which is referred as “the worst crisis in Korean history”. Due to the multiple bankrupt of big firms in South Korea and the domino effect from it, most of those homeless have unbelievable amount of debt. In the first chapter of the book, it stated that Economics can explain “some of everything”, because Economics defines our subject in terms of its theoretical approach, rather than its subject matter. As I read the sentence, I could feel the subject would provide the answer of the question that I was looking for. The interest in the Economics and Finance lead me to dream about studying in Hong Kong. Historically, Hong Kong was the central herb of trade in Asia, and the legacy of British imperialism made Hong Kong to one of the most lively city in the world. I developed a survey and distributed in Seoul. My population was cigarette smokers and their opinions on the Korean cigarette tax. By collecting and processing data from my surveys, I could judge the rightness of the economic policy in eyes of South Koreans. Compounding a data and knowledge from class gave me a valuable experience in research skills. The practical application of the theories from textbooks gave me a strong insight about my potential in financial sector. Consequently, the desire to learn Economics raised me to be one of the best student of the school. During my junior year, I was awarded an outstanding performance award in Economics, which awards to the best student in school’s entire Economics
