Cultural competence is a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system. I feel that cultural competence traits are a part of my everyday life. I was international friends, in which I accept their language and culture. Through-out my life I have gain an understanding on the GLBTQ community, and I have nothing against the action of this community. I have gain in understanding in the daily activities performed within other cultures as well. With the personal reflection I noticed that everything was either strongly agree or agree. Some of the best connect through-out my life have come was international students, which helps me gain more of an understanding of their culture. I have event took the time to try difference cultural foods, as well listening to their music to understand their culture. I have work with people from a culture that's unfamiliar to me, and it was a great way to enhance my cultural competence. I have even put myself in social situations where I was the only one of your cultural group, to really see how international may feel every day. Cultural competence is important because it helps my ability to engage with families and communities throughout my neighbor as well as anyone else community. I have to keep finding ways to expand my understanding of other people culture. Cultural competence requires that organizations have a defined set of values and principles, and demonstrate behaviors, attitudes, policies, and structures that enable them to work effectively cross-culturally.
I would like to work as a City Planner in the state of Colorado. On the city website the job description was in full detail and expressed that the city was an equal opportunity employer. I did notice that an additional requirement was a Colorado driver license, which limits it pool base for employees. The city council had no diversity at all, there were only older white council member. This organization doesn’t show any cultural competence skills, even within the city image, there are no pics or African-American or Asians. I couldn’t find anything demonstrating Staff development or the service being
offered. Their mission statement is to enhancement of our current services, and participation in public, private and regional partnerships. This contradicts with what being shown through-out the website, in which this is the City website. I didn’t notice any cultural competence principles in their strategic planning, policy development, program design, and service delivery process throughout the city. Even with the educational and recreational opportunities for the community, I didn’t see anything any experiences that gave a reflection of all cultural groups. There nothing to motivate me about this city from the website, which has me second guessing my option on moving to Colorado.

“Cultural competence is the ability to engage in actions or create conditions that maximize the optimal development of client and client systems” (Sue & Sue, 2013, p. 49). Multicultural competence includes a counselor to be aware of his or her biases, knowledge of the culture they are evaluating, and skills to evaluate a client with various backgrounds (Sue & Sue, 2013). Client assessment involves gathering information pertaining to the client’s condition. Making a culturally responsive diagnosis involves using the DSM-IV-TR axis (Hays, 2008). Following the axis backwards is ideal to discovering the client’s diagnosis, understanding the client’s ADDRESSING outline will help to come to a closer resolution for a diagnosis.

I realize that understanding of the culture that the people I work with are the key to successful intervention and outcome. Being sensitive to individual’s culture and acquire adequate knowledge about their cultural background enhance the productivity of the interaction I may have with a client that could be family, individual, community or organization. Understanding of one’s cultural background could also prevent and minimize employing biases which potentially harm the clients I work with. In view of this, I have learned that before I engaged in any activities with individual or group I should take the time to understand the cultural backroad of the person to get insight on what is acceptable and not in that culture. Furthermore, I have learned to identify and utilize one’s strength as a tool to aid the change processes the client and I desire for. Due to the dynamic nature of people’s culture updating myself to the emerging changes in a different culture would be one of the area of continued learning I am focusing. For instance, in the contemporary US society, I can see how the immigration brought several people with diverse culture to the US general population structure. Considering this I have been convinced to be knowledgeable and culturally competent to effectively address the needs of people I will work with in different setting.
Cultural competence has to do with one’s culture. Culture affects among other factors, how children are raised, how families communicate, what is considered normal or abnormal, ways of coping with issues, the way we dress, when and where we seek medical treatment, and so forth. I should know because I come from a very cultural home where it is considered bad to talk to a male doctor about anything gynecological.
Because of my culture, it has allowed for me to be more understanding of those that are different from me. The recognition of what it is to be different from what normal American culture may look like has brought forth a new and deeper level of empathy without even realizing. Growing up in a diverse area where my group of friends came from a wide variety of backgrounds has helped me to see the similarities we share as well as getting more acquainted and understanding of why certain groups do the things that they do. With that being said, I recognize that though I may be more equipped to related with people from different backgrounds a bit more than someone else, I know that I may still face some challenges (especially with how this nation is when it comes to race and cultural relations). Today’s management in the workforce is composed of all types of people verses thirty years ago when white males held a majority of upper-management positions in companies. These positions are now held by a mixture of ethnic back grounds and women who hold just as many if not more management positions then men. Just by looking at the changes in management demographics shows how important it is for people to understand cultural competency in the workplace. Dr. Roosevelt Thomas Jr. (1999) stated, “Diversity is the collective mixture of whomever we have in our workforce characterized by their differences and similarities” (p.11). Managers and supervisors must understand the characteristics of a diversity mature individual; they also need to be able to articulate the differences between affirmative action, managing diversity, understanding and valuing diversity to build skills that transforms awareness into productive and supportive workplace behaviors.
My culture identity, as I know it as is African American. My culture can be seen in food, literature, religion, language, the community, family structure, the individual, music, dance, art, and could be summed up as the symbolic level. Symbolic, because faith plays a major role in our daily lives through song, prayer, praise and worship. When I’m happy I rely on my faith, same as when I’m sad, for I know things will get better as they have before.
Cultural competence is showing an awareness of the cultural diversity around us. Cultural competence is striving in your understanding of these cultures; of these differences in language, social practices, values, beliefs and attitudes. Cultural competence is showing respect for these differences. Cultural competence is realising that inclusion is an ongoing process, a process that we must continue to strive for. Strive for understanding, strive for inclusion, strive to live together, embrace our differences and find the strength that is there to be gained from these differences and from living together in one community.
Cultural intelligence (CQ) is defined as an individual’s capability to adapt and function in situations that involves new cultural setting. CQ is regarded a useful tool as it can allow an individual to work in effectively multi-cultural settings. An individual can develop CQ competencies through personal experiences such as travelling/studying abroad, working in a firm that is established from a culture different from their own and also studying the many ways people of different cultures function.
Discussing different cultures with people of another country can help give you an idea of how different America is from other places. Sometimes Americans only think about America and not how other countries do things. Talking to someone of another country gave me more respect for them.
