The cultural group I picked is Muslim, because I feel that more and more are joining the United States and I hope to learn the correct ways to respect their culture. Furthermore, it is growing and becoming prominent and yet I have not learned about what is surrounding me in my own back yard. Muslims are originated from Islam, however inhabit place all over the world namely Islam and the United States. One interesting facts I learned from reading about the Muslim faith is that a folkway they have is to dress modestly. I did know that they had to dress with cloths covering their body, even the men always have pants on never shorts, and the women have a scarf covering their head. They believe that there is one God, called Allah, and that it is the same in all Abrahamic religions, along with being the continuation of Judaism and Christianity. They are required to pray five times a day, which can restrict some of their daily social or work obligations although it has become more and more common for them to pray at different places due to work constrictions. They also direct this prayer and meditation time toward the center of Mecca. Due to having to be faithful and focused they are forbidden to drink alcohol. They lead a very modest life within their families, there is not much cross-cultural variation they stick to their beliefs and feel as if those are the only ones to live by. They do however have some similar beliefs such as it is very disrespectful for a child to challenge an adult. On the other hand there are cultures that find it disrespectful not to look at someone in the eye when speaking to them, and in the Muslim culture it is frowned upon as if you are challenging their authority. The role of women is not equal in some Muslim societies where it is equal in others, so it varies from place to place (Muslim culture, 2016). The use of media or any type of technology is accepted throughout the Muslim culture, even though originally they were forbidden to have access to it.
