To represent the wild, I chose a sheet of music because both depend on basic patterns to create the complexity present in both the wild and music. For instance, in music, a major scale always follows a pattern of “whole-whole-half-whole-whole-whole-half” in terms of distance from one note to the next. Even though a variety of major scales exist and have distinct differences in sound, each major scale follows the same pattern, from the basic C major scale to the more challenging F-sharp major scale. The same applies in the wild between the varying types of organisms. Despite the fact that they may not look, act, or live in the same habitat, all follows the same life cycle. All organisms are born and will die, no matter if they are a dandelion,
squirrel, squid, or anything else. Moreover, similar to how major scales are related to minor scales, the species found in the wild interact and form relationships amongst each other. Both C major and A minor consist of the same keys, however they do not sound alike. Like C major and A minor, the roles in the relationships of the wild are essentially the same. To examine the predator and prey relationship, one of the most obvious and famous relationships, generally speaking, no species are solely predators nor prey. For example, in some situations, the bird can prey on the snake, however, in other situations the snake preys on the bird. In this metaphor, only two species share this relationship: the bird and the snake. Similar to C major and A minor, the roles that snakes and birds plays upon the context. If a piece uses C as a the tonic, its key signature is referred to as C major. Likewise, if a bird preys on a snake, the bird plays the role of the predator. Meanwhile, if the piece focuses on A as its tonic, but has no sharps (like C major), the piece’s key signature becomes A minor. The snake and bird’s relationship once again mimics this; if in a separate incident the snake preys on the bird, the snake is recognized as a predator and the bird is the prey. As stated before, nothing is inherently major or minor, predator or prey, instead, context is necessary to assign these traits to music and the living things in the wild. In conclusion, music conveys the wild because of its roots in basic relationships, which in turn cultivates its intricacy.

The play I went to see was The Music Man performed by the Mesa Encore Theatre at the Mesa Community College. I saw this performance on November 20th. The main performers in this play were Zac Bushman as Harold Hill and Lauren Koeritzer as Marian Paroo. Alongside them, a mix of both adults and children as young as 8 acted in this production. The cast and crew used appropriate clothing to match the time and place. Lights were utilized scarcely, with not much more than spotlights or front and back lights. The set was extravagant, cute, and fitting for the setting and time. Overall, this musical was vibrantly performed and left me with positive impressions regarding presentation and production.
The live theatrical production I chose to see was 9 to 5 The Musical. The production was performed by Fayetteville Technical Community College’s very own Fine Arts Department. The musical is based on the film released by Fox in 1980. Collin Higgins adapted the film from the book 9 to 5 written by Patricia Resnick. It wasn’t until 2008 that the film was adapted to a theatrical production. The production was originally brought to broadway by Robert Greenbait and Dolly Parton wrote the lyrics and the music for the Musical. The run on broadway was very short but the production later toured in other countries around the around the world.
The Wiz is a musical/movie released in 1978 that was an adaptation of the popular film “Wizard of Oz”. It included several very popular stars of the time, which were Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and Nipsey Russell. The movie set place in New York City where the main character, Dorothy, suddenly is swept by a tornado in the middle of a snowstorm. She later then found herself lost in a city she had no clue about and curious as to how she could return home. After meeting 3 other characters during her journey that share similarities, they all embarked on a trip to OZ to fix each of their problems. Throughout the movie characters apply their own soundtrack through singing songs in harmony that compliment the mood of each scene.
Into the Woods is a musical based off of classic Grimms Brothers’ characters and their fairytales. The production explores the consequences of their wishes and the quests that they fulfill and take on. In writing this play, it seems as though Sondheim and Lapine were attempting to bring to life the classic fairytales of their youth with a twist of reality. Through this portrayal of classic tales, the audience is also taken back into their childhood for the entire two hours and forty-five minutes.
On a Wednesday night I saw Texas State Theatre and Dance Department's performance of A Chorus Line. The main plot of the musical entails the audition of 17 dancers for several Broadway roles on the chorus line. However, during their auditions the director Zach asks for personal stories of each dancer's life. Though the plot of this musical is seemingly simple in its twist on the traditional audition, it explores themes that reveal the human experience, the search for individuality, and the sense of self.
The end of a semester is the most stressful time for students because of those dreaded finals. Anyone who lived through the 1990s should know the song a young lion and his pals sang after meeting for the first time. However, as the years pass by, society forgets the simple pleasures of youth and the two words that can make all troubles go away. “Hakuna Matata” was a song written by Tim Rice with music by Elton John. This song is also a story about a warthog before he discovered this amazing expression. However, the biggest part of the song is about being carefree and forgetting any troubles that may arise. In the musical, Hamilton, a lot can be learned about history. There are various stories and events being told throughout both acts that helps us visualize what it was like in that time period. The history of how Hamilton impacted America is being told in this musical. He came as an immigrant but played a huge role in the nation’s history still. I believe this history is being told to educate the country about the history and significance of Alexander Hamilton. This is important because most people do not know much about Alexander Hamilton other than he is a founding father. There is so much more to know about his journey and why he fights for what he believes in. I imagine this musical is so popular because it is put into the modern form of
A Chorus Line is a musical that focuses on Broadway dances who are auditioning for spots on a chorus line. Throughout the play, the different backgrounds and struggles of the different dances are shown to the audience, explaining the behavior of the dancers. As the past of each of the dancers is unfolded, the audience understands and appreciates the musical more and more. Not only does A Chorus Line portray the difficulties that performers must overcome to be successful, it also demonstrates the real world fact that not everyone can “make it.”
This piano piece is from the romantic era, demonstrating breathtakingly lyrical and expressive melody, chromatic harmony, and use of dissonance to convey emotion (Wright 232-233). The dark beauty, haunting quality, melodic structure, and lyrical nature reminded me of Frederic Chopin, the master of the nocturne (Wright 232, 270). After comparing it to several pieces by the composer, I determined that it was Nocturne in C Sharp Minor (Op 27 No 1)1.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, (1756-1791), was a creative composer of the Classical era. Wolfgang Mozart’s piano sonatas present a particularly neat picture. During the Classical Era, the type of piano which was the fortepiano was extremely different than today’s modern piano. That being said, the use of dynamics was crucial and affective in the classical period. I noticed that each of his sonatas has its own character, story line, dialogue, and meaning. In Mozart’s piano sonata in B flat major, K. 281- first movement, there is dialogue between the different dynamics and phrase structures that is heard in his sonata. With this sonata, Mozart unquestionably creates a change in mood and dialogue by adding a sense of dynamics, timbre, registers and musical phrasing to each thematic material of a musical section.
On Friday January 6th 2017, guests Grant Elbert and Pamela Haynes performed for Grant’s trumpet recital. There were two instruments included in this performance including the Trumpet which was played by Grant and the piano which was played by Pamela. During the preview of Grant’s trumpet recital, he performed “Sonata for Trumpet and Piano” by Kent Kennon, which was three movements. This piece was designed for difficult and advanced music for trumpet players. This specific piece of music is known as a modern. During this piece Grant uses three sound changes for the trumpet including the cupmute, cupsorche and harmonmute. All three movements had different meters, harmony, tempo, rhythm, and form. We often take life for granted. In the process of fulfilling our desires, we gradually destroy the essence of nature and our morals. In Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s “A Musical Instrument”, the parallel between nature and humanity reflects the blindness and greed of humanity through the natural process of destruction and creation. Conveyed significantly with literary elements such as imagery, tone, alliteration and repetition, Browning brings to attention the reality of humanity’s actions and drives mankind to grasp the idea that we are inherently born sinful.
For me personally, music appreciation is defined as looking at different pieces of music and musical forms, and learning to find appreciation for them. This appreciation is formed not only by listening to several pieces of music, but by learning to understand what you may be listening too. This involves introducing yourself to many pieces of music and learning to interpret, what makes each piece different and unique. Understanding the historical background and societal changes that have taken place during the creation of the musical piece, is also an important factor to consider. Music is not only creative, but it also makes up part of a societies history. Music is an art form that connects different societies and cultures together, it possess the amazing ability to make us into one.
